UPDATE Young Finn Killed Crossing Road in Southern Phuket: Driver Had Been Drinking
By Sert Tongdee Saturday, May 16, 2015
A BLOOD alcohol test on driver Chaiyan Maikarn produced a reading above 0.070 so he will face serious charges, Chalong police said this evening.
PHUKET: A young man from Finland was killed when struck by a car while crossing a main road in southern Phuket early today.
The 25-year-old man, dressed in a black top and camouflage shorts, was struck as he crossed Patak Road, not far from Phuket's most prominent southern landmark, Chalong Circle, about 4.20am.
He was hit by a Honda SUV being driven towards the circle, according to Ruamjai Rescue Phuket workers who attended.
Phuketwan has the man's name but will not publish it until we can be sure relatives in Finland have been notified.
The man's body was taken to a Vachira Phuket Hospital's morgue in Phuket City.

RIP for the victim. That particular part of Patak road is downhill a racing road. Speed over 100 kmph ( cars and motorbikes!)is not unusual. Road lights are weak, and when wearing dark clothes while crossing you have all the ingredients for a traffic disaster at that location during dark hours.

@livinLOS
Have you considered the pedestrian crossing the road may have been drunk, or tired? As he was from Finland, maybe he looked the wrong way before stepping out in front of a car by mistake?
@Kurt, same for you! Maybe the CRV was only doing 50kph and the pedestrian looked the wrong way? None of us actually know what happened so why blame the driver?
Imagine you are driving home one night, sober as you would be, and someone ran out in front of your car and you hit them through no fault of your own. Would you like to be lambasted by idiots on a website blaming you ?
Making assumptions based on no evidence just makes you both look foolish
The key thing here is that sadly a young man has lost his life, which is a tragedy.

Nowhere in the world people are allowed to cross 4 way road. Expecially in dark and at 4.20 in the night.. Anyway RIP, because lost the life at 25 is always a tragedy.

Dear Discover Thainess. If you read my comment correctly than notice I did not blame this particular driver. That stretch of Patak road is a well known racing road.Yes, at that time of the night perhaps the pedestrian looked first wrong way before crossing or he estimated the speed of the car wrongly.
Moreover, suggesting that at 04:20 pm a car drives there just 50 kph sounds a bit funny. With that speed you would have been able to avoid the crossing pedestrian. Well, id the police is doing a good accident investigation, than the car brake traces, and the damage of the car + the condition of victim body can estimate the real speed of the car. Right? And of course check driver on alcohol and drugs. Your question asked @ LivinLos about Victim being drunk/tired, do you not consider the same about the driver of the car? He did actually kill the pedestrian, not the other way around. Cars kill people on Phuket.
So, here no assumptions, means no idiots/fools. The question or the driver was breath tested is not idiot, not foolish. Specially not in Thailand.

4.20 AM in the morning, wearing clothes that would have made him very hard to see on that section of road, who was drunk it's hard to say, but I am sure the driver would have been arrested and charged by the police if he/she was DUI

All drivers and those involved at all accidents should be tested for alcohol and mind altering drugs in their blood but this is Thailand, it is not the same as developed Western countries

If Thai peopel put the light on the car when it's start to be dark then you save many life.

Great to see the police have taken an alcohol reading - well done to BIB. No great surprise to hear of someone drink driving in Phuket sadly.
Mr Chaiyan needs to get some "red bull wings" and fly himself to Singapore pretty quickly !!

I wonder if the drunk Thai driver will have to compensate the Fin's family millions of baht as well as have his national ID card held by the police until he does....just as foreigners have to pay Thais when they are determined responsible for accidents

Editor Comment:
The amounts are usually in proportion to what people can afford, sky. If you are not happy, perhaps you should adopt a Thai wage in the interests of fairness.
@ Discover Thainess- maybe better for more facts to emerge before lambasting others. To quote yourself- 'Making assumptions based on no evidence just makes you look foolish.'
I wonder if the Driver, as with the Canadian, will have to stump up B1.5 mil in compensation or not?

As most people understand, MR, compensation is negotiated on what people can afford.
Chaiyan got some bad luck, not long ago he got stabbed and now this..

The driver will get serious charge after the test showed above 0.070.
What he'll get a fine of 1000 baht instead of 750 baht and a slap on his finger and a told off that don't do that again..........

it always perplexes me when people say "rip" -- what is the alternative to resting in peace? how is a dead human resting when they are brown bread?

It's a civil way of communicating sympathy, ayjay. Much more appropriate than the alternative.
As most people understand, MR, compensation is negotiated on what people can afford." Ed. u always have a way to protect Thais. nothing bad about that as i do it myself many times but to say that its negotiated to what people can afford is just silly of u.. shouldn't it be more like negotiated to what someone needs ? or what is the negotiation all about in the first page? so if a multimillionaire end up in a problem he should pay trillions? just coz he can? in this case it could work coz the victim from finland and thats how the law works in Finland I've been told.. No need to add more,,

Editor Comment:
Indeed, if a multimillionaire culpably kills someone, he should pay millions in compensation. If a poor man kills someone, he should pay an amount proportionate to the amount paid by the multimillionaire. No other payment schedule is fair in all circumstances.
Would you please respect our sorrow. The victim is my son.

"Making assumptions based on no evidence just makes you both look foolish"
Making assumptions based on experience and evidence.. That were then proven to be 100% correct.. Makes who look foolish ??
