Rescuers on Phuket took 30 minutes to cut two bodies free today

Wrong-Way Phuket Pickup Pair Pay for 'Ghost Ride' With Their Lives

Thursday, March 26, 2015
PHUKET: Two men in a pickup being driven the wrong way on a divided road on Phuket died when a SuperCheap truck crashed into their vehicle early today.

Although SuperCheap trucks have an abysmal safety record, police blamed the driver of the pickup for ''ghost-riding'' the wrong way and colliding with the truck near Sai Keaw beach, north of the Tachatchai Checkpoint and close to Sarasin Bridge, about 4am.

It's not known whether the pickup had its headlights on or where the vehicle was heading.

Rescuers took 30 minutes to cut free the bodies of driver Suthipong Meesiri and passenger Suthida Eamsamang.

The people in the SuperCheap truck - driver Nopparit Sakpirom and passenger Pakapan Chootong - were taken to Thalang Hospital with minor injuries.

An impact that kills two people instantly indicates at least one of the vehicles was travelling at speed.

''The Mitsubishi pickup was heading south in the north-bound one-way lane,'' said Lieutenant Kongpan. ''It is always a dangerous and illegal thing to do.''

Many of Phuket's motorcycle riders go against the traffic when it suits, often endangering their lives and the lives of others. When motorcycle riders graduate to larger vehicles, they often maintain the same habits as learned on motorcycles.

Local traffic in Thailand often breaks the rules for the sake of time and convenience. SuperCheap trucks frequently feature in crashes, more often than any other brand on Phuket.

Driving 30 minutes from Rawai to Phuket Town, you are experience 'ghost-riding' every 5 minutes of your ride, not only motorbike, but cars too.
And were are the police patrols, like in Singapore, to confiscate your driving license , you motorbike, your car and make you do a few months prison time, regardless you have to feed a family. A stupid excuse.

I have learnt to drive my motorbike the wrong way on roads since coming to Thailand and now do it many times as it is easy. As some Thais say if it is bad luck I die.

Since Lieutenant Kongpan acknowledges how dangerous this activity is, perhaps he could instruct his officers to start pulling over and fining these drivers.

Better yet, impound the vehicle on the spot.

Thailand does not lack good laws. Just good law enforcement. People break the law here because they can get away with it scot free.

It's sad to see that some of those expats who definitely know better, copy the bad habits of local traffic.

A bit off topic but last week coming from the airport around 11pm we had stopped at red lights in Thalang. While stationary, a motorbike flew past us doing what I estimate to be at least 120kph, if not more. A car had just crossed in front of us and it was a sheer miracle this driver did not hit it.

It was obvious he did not care one bit about his or anyone else's safety. I was lost for words.

So now Supercheap drivers have gone from 'notorious' to 'abysmal' have they? You really have a bug in your backside about them.

Strange how when you generalise its OK- when others do its bigotted, racist or thai-ist!

I suggest you do your research, Mister Ree - although on past experience, that seems unlikely. As readers know, SuperCheap has been involved in a succession of crashes. It's not a generalisation. Surprise yourself and me - do a search before typing. You may not understand, but racism and bigotry have nothing to do with road safety. I am prepared to keep publishing your comments only because they exemplify lack of thought.

Wow, at this rate, Thailand could beat out Namibia as THE most dangerous roads on the planet. Maybe the police are taking bets that Thailand can win the #1 spot.

That would be illegal.

If any of you have the patience to attend and observe what happens every day and every hour at Supercheap Baan Liphon, will remain surprised. Dozens of motorbikes from South ( Esso Petrol Station ) heading to Thalang, are driven on the wrong side. I've been living there for more than three years and I've never seen any policemen to control it!
