Woranart Wongvanich is Marina Manager at Royal Phuket Marina

Woman Takes Top Job as Manager at Royal Phuket Marina

Friday, September 11, 2015
PHUKET: Royal Phuket Marina confirmed the appointment of Woranart Wongvanich as Marina Manager of the five Gold Anchor-awarded marina.

A Suratthani native, Khun Woranart has worked in Thailand's marine industry for more than 20 years, over 10 of those at Royal Phuket Marina where she has worked her way through the ranks to be recently appointed marina manager.

''Joining Royal Phuket Marina at the beginning, I have enjoyed being part of the development team and have seen the marina and facilities grow. I admire the vision of the Chairman, Gulu Lalvani, who is always looking to develop the company and marine tourism in Phuket, and am very proud of his confidence in appointing me as the Marina Manager,'' Khun Woranart said.

Being the only Thai female marina manager in Thailand and one of just a few Thai nationals who have held the post, Khun Woranart acknowledges the importance of team work.

''The most enjoyable part of my work at Royal Phuket Marina is the marina team. They are passionate and professional. I am proud to be a part of this team and together we strive to deliver the best service possible to our customers,'' Khun Woranart added.

Before embarking on a career in the marine industry, Khun Woranart worked in the travel industry and made a name for herself in companies such as Diethelm Events (Phuket), Tropic Asia Tours, The Travel Company, Fast Boats, Asia Voyages and the Pansea resort.

Khun Woranart brings this hospitality and tourism experience to bear in her new managerial position and is confident in the future potential of Phuket and Thailand's marine leisure tourism potential.

''It's encouraging that central government sees the importance of marine tourism for Thailand. Here at Royal Phuket Marina we look forward to working closely with government officials in all departments to promote and develop the industry further.''

The first and only five Gold Anchor-awarded marina in Thailand and first to receive the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence for 2015, Royal Phuket Marina is the premier lifestyle destination in Phuket and iconic waterfront destination in Asia.

A woman - as opposed to a man?

Editor Comment:

Gender still remains relevant in breakthrough appointments. Check that glass ceiling, sid. Mostly-male industries and sports - like sailing - have yet to completely embrace equality. This is a positive move.

Congratulations Khun Woranart.

I know all that, Ed, but it's shoddy reporting and not PC to point out her gender.

Editor Comment:

The minds of warped commenters are where foolish biases reside, sid. This report is a ''media release.'' Best take your problems to Royal Phuket Marina management. I am sure they will welcome you, whatever you are.

there is nothing wrong with the press release, it's your headline that's dodgy, Ed.

The only aspects that makes this appointment news is that a woman has finally won a job that previously always went to men. Goodbye, Christy.

"The only aspects that makes this appointment news is that a woman has finally won a job that previously always went to men"

That's nonsense. Top hospitality appointments are routinely reported as news in Phuket and the region. But their gender is not usually highlighted.

This is a marina manager's job, Christy, not a resort or a hotel. Please list the other marinas managed by women. It's a breakthrough, and most women (and plenty of men) will be pleased to see it reported. Now stop wasting my time.

Congratulations Khun Woranart big step up from working with Bill at the Travel company sure he is looking down wishing the best.

I do to think the headline is innapropriate.

Yacht Haven has been run for many a year by a couple and she does a lot of the work. Rattanachai Shipyard in Phuket where hundreds of boats are overhauled every year is also managed by a Thai female and has done succesfully for many years at least 12 I know of.

Unithai Shipyard in Rayong had last time I worked there one of the only female ship repair managers I have ever seen in the world.

Sure there are many other instances

You've named two women in a male-dominated field, Michael. Now there is another one - and a reason to acclaim her appointment. As you should know, female crews on yachts are rare. It's a sport/business where the barriers have yet to tumble. Whose side does that put you on? It is plainly ridiculous to downplay the achievements of pioneering women in a world where equality remains a mirage for half the population.

Congratulations on your new and exciting position Khun Woranark.
I trust you will bring all of your observation, experience and imagination to bear in making your facility one of the premier "Must Visit Ports" in the yachting industry.
