Officials have called for road constructors to light up hazards at night

Woman Crashes into Bypass Barrier and Ditch: Phuket Call for Better Lighting

Thursday, May 14, 2015
PHUKET: A woman escaped serious injury when her car ran into a road barrier in Phuket City's bypass road early today, spinning the vehicle into a ditch.

Phuket Highways Director Samak Luedwonghad said today that all contractors digging ditches or doing work on Phuket's roads should make sure their projects are well-lit at night.

The woman, aged about 30, crashed the car about 12.20am outside Phuket International Hospital, where she was treated briefly before being sent on to Vachira Phuket Hospital for care of her broken leg.

Investigating officer Captain Akkaradet Pongprom of Phuket City Police Station said the driver told police she didn't see the barrier or the ditch, which is part of the construction work for the underpass at the Tesco Lotus intersection.

I have been driving that section of road many times and it is indeed very easy to crash into the barriers. You are basically driving on a highway at highway speeds and all of a sudden your lane disappears or even worse two lanes merge into one. It is badly lit, not enough early warning signs and too fast a merge. If this was the west she could sue the city for a lot of damages.

They have lights, they just don't work. Ever.
The new lights at the airport road don't work.
They very rarely work.

Nowhere in Thailand do they put advance warning signs for roadworks. It's quite common to come round a corner or over a hill & land right on top of roadworks.

It doesn't matter whether day or night, advance warning is a must for drivers to have time to slow down & take the necessary actions, often one or more lanes merging.

Of course good lighting is then a must at night.

Thailand has a highway code; but it is in serious need of major overhaul, especially with regards to signs.

I hope there would be some strict rules in the contract the contractors have with the state agency. If not, the state agency needs to take full responsibility. If there are rules, then the contractor should be held to account.

Have often thought that stretch of road is very dangerous, due partly to the U-turn by the hospital to get ONTO it. You need to carefully watch the speeding traffic behind you while trying to get to the inside lane & suddenly these half-done 'works' appear & the lanes close from 3 to 2 just as you get to speed of the other traffic. It's frightening so it's easy to see how mistakes can be made. Maybe after this they'll try to finish the works a bit faster? Or put lights there anyway.

@ Logic "Nowhere in Thailand do they put advance warning signs for roadworks." A very broad brush statement and I'm surprised Mr Ed let it through. More and more roadworks ARE signposted- 2 recent re-repaving jobs in Kamala support this and I have seen advance signage on highway works in other parts of the country. Slowly people are getting more responsible but it seems to be down to local Orbators, not the contractors.

Editor Comment:

I would say Logic is correct in what he says about ''advanced'' warning signs. In Australia you are told hundreds of metres down the road about coming hazards. That said, road surfaces and preventive action are more obvious these days on Phuket. Catseye's now dot the approach to the bridge to Phuket. Thorough driver education is still lacking.

@Logic: Normally there are signs far ahead. These are red signs with black writing, just in Thai. One more reason to learn the language, or simply to be careful if you see one of those signs.

From Heroines monument towards Cherng Talay, be very careful at night. No street lights but heavy roadworks. Had many accidents there recently.
