Weathermen Warn It's Going to be a Wet Phuket Weekend
By Prasit Tarnsirisin Thursday, August 20, 2015
PHUKET: Substantial rain is likely to continue falling over most of Phuket through to Saturday, prompting forecaster to warn that small boats should consider not putting to sea.
Tourists are advised by the holiday island's meteorologists to avoid trips in small boats to Racha or Phi Phi. Waves could rise to two metres and winds could reach 45kph.
''We are still in the stormy monsoon season,'' said one forecaster, suggesting a 60 percent chance of rain falling across Phuket.
Conditions are expected to improve with rain easing off on Sunday.

This video well explain inn a comprehensive graphic language two major hazards:
1. a hazard associated with a strong surf, like in a green season in Thailand, and difficulties to control yourself when you are in a surf
2.a hazard associated with being intoxicated and difficulty to control one's movement while in that state

Would hotel play such videos in a green season in lobbies or on TVs like Hotel channel, that may contribute to a better awareness of hazards among vacationers.

@ Sue. We can not expect hotels to warn guest for everything bad what can happen on Phuket. Violence of tuk tuk drivers, double pricing, unsafe road conditions/driving, no law enforcement, rip currents at beaches.
I walked at Naiharn beach a few days ago, and the beach guards were fine spread over the whole stretch. Flags were in place, guards were whistling to tourist who just made that ' mind your own business' arm wave to the guards. We simply have to accept that there are tourist not wanted to be warned or listen to beach guards.
A Beach Flyer handed out together with the thai immigration card for arrivals on Phuket should be enough.
If I have to warn tourists in my hotel about the dangers of Phuket, I don't know where to start. And it is Phuket government duty. They earn the tourist taxes and can do something if they feel obligated. I take care my hotel pool safety, during opening hours guarded.

Tourists need more brochures like a hole in the head, Kurt. Much larger warnings of billboard size at the airport, perhaps SMS messages too, coupled with a personal, direct message on check-in is what's required. By the time people reach the beach ready to swim, it's too late.
During the days around the time of New Moon and Full Moon, we have always extra low - and extra high water, resulting in much stronger ( rip) currents during tidal.

"A hole in the head"? Do you mean instead of brain there is just air between the ears?
There are just a few thinks to do at beaches, for that are the beach guards. It is public area, it is responsibility of Phuket government, who earn enormous amounts of tourist tax. Do not shuffle responsibilities to guesthouse/hotel owners. Hotels who take good care around their pools with paying their attending pool staff, are not willing to do the same job the Phuket authorities are refusing to do for THEIR beaches. The authorities responsible for the beaches and catch the money for it, have to start to do their job. Simple. Has nothing to do with us, hotel owners. So easy, be lazy, do nothing ( just say: no budget, and you are of the hook as thai authority). But we, hotel owners, keep quiet, we pay the tourist taxes to these thai authorities who not have budgets.

You seem to have difficulty understanding that resorts and guesthouses share responsibility for the safety of swimmers - because they are the ones who lure the tourists to Phuket at a time of the year when not all beach swimming is safe swimming. Once the resorts and guesthouse accept the need to do the right thing, the problem will be solved, kurt.
Mr Editor, with respect, you wrote:..By the time people reach the beach ready to swim, it is to late.. Really? Than dismiss the beach guards.
I have been talking with beach guards, most of them try their best, and they are frustrated when tourists not follow their advice. Beach guards here feel sometimes as being just a lame duck.

As someone connected with accommodation on Phuket, you should do as the life guards ask. Warn them all hen they arrive, and let them know when it's safe to swim and when it's not. You would be doing something positive, Kurt. A rare change.
Sad to expose you ignorance dear ed. Tourism and hospitality does what it says.
To say guests are lured is nothing but rude. Guests receive offers. Not entrapment. Oh dear.

lure: to attract, entice, or tempt; allure.
I am afraid you've proved your inability to understand and use the English language yet again, gee.
I am fairly and squarely with the Ed on this one, hotels and guesthouse a absolutely have a moral duty to warn guests about the dangers of the seas at this time of year. I can see Kurt's point but over charging is not life threatening - the seas absolutely are.
