Monday, November 24, 2014
PHUKET: Another crackdown on weapons and drugs by Phuket's police commander has swollen Phuket Prison to a record number of 3010 inmates, a top jail official said today.

''But we can't stop the Phuket commander making arrests,'' the jail official said. ''He is doing a good job.''

While the Asian Beach Games were taking place on the island from November 14-23, Major General Pachara Boonyasit and his team were busy making 160 arrests that included the seizure of 12 guns and 37 knives, many put on display today at Phuket Police headquarters in Phuket City.

The tally of drugs nabbed during the Games period was: heroin, 83.51 grams; marijuana, 105 grams; ya bah methamphetamine, 18,083 tablets; ya ice, 367 grams; kratom leaves, 55 kilos.

Seven of the 12 guns were home made thai pradit weapons.

Phuket Prison, built to hold 750 inmates, ranks as one of the most crowded in Thailand.

They better extend the building plans for the new jail & keep the old one in service as well or they will out grow the new one fast at this rate.

Editor Comment:

The new jail commander liked PW's idea of keeping the old jail as a remand jail, separating the pre-trial innocent from the post-trial guilty for the first time.
