The motorcycle and sidecar involved in Phuket's first Songkran fatal

Phuket Walking Woman, Fisherman Killed in New Year Tragedies

Saturday, April 16, 2011
A WOMAN who was killed by a vehicle while walking along a roadway in Phuket City today became Phuket's second death this Songkran.

The first Phuket victim came four-and-a-half hours earlier in a pre-dawn collision between a minivan and a saem lao motorcycle and sidecar that killed one amateur fisherman and seriously injured his friend.

The Songkran ''seven days of danger'' on Thailand's roads is drawing to a close this weekend, and until 5.30am Phuket's roads had been death-free.

The pre-dawn collision on the Phuket airport road near Thalang Techical College - a popular stretch for overtaking - left Narapat Sararak, 48, dead. His companion, Wittaya Choonark, 31, was admitted to hospital with both legs broken.

The pair had been on a fishing trip to Nai Yang and were on their way home. The only person in the van was driver Pongsakorn Jamsai, 48, who was also injured in the crash.

At 10am in Phuket City, near the Super Cheap supermarket in Thepkasattri Road, an as-yet unnamed pedestrian became the second New Year victim when she was hit and killed by a vehicle while walking on the road.

Last year at Songkran, Phuket suffered two fatalitites.

Phuket's total toll for the first two months of 2011 was 17. This compares favorably with the death toll of 28 after the first two months of 2010, and 27 in the same period of 2009.

I saw the aftermath of an accident last night about 7.30-8pm, in front of Land & House Park entrance on Chaofa West. From what I saw, there was certainly one fatality - a man on a motorbike. Any news on this?

Chalong police recorded the incident but say there was no death.

I leave home early in the morning, every day I see these old motor bikes and sidecars with no lights, drivers with no helmets. Due to the poor street lighting it is almost impossible to see these unlicenced cycles until it is almost to late!
Then there are the "shops on wheels", dangerous, slow and again invariably with no lights. Why do the police not check these vehicles, or for that matter any motor cycle that they stop to see if the rear light is in working order. I am deeply sorry for this recent loss of life but surely a few baht would have prevented this tragedy.
