PHUKET: Video posted online by Phuket's Kusoldharm Foundation shows a punk motorcycle rider up on one wheel in a risky ride through Patong. The volunteers and residents say that French and Italian punks have taken to racing motorcycles and showing off their skills in Patong Sai 3 Road, just around the corner from Kathu Police Station. Some lie flat on their motorcycles in high-speed races, the residents say.

"Around the corner of Kathu police station'? That must be a joke. That is not possible. Police would act right a way. Kathu Police Superintendent would not allow that in his line of duty.

For an interesting show sit yourself down with a deckchair and a cooler full of beer by the traffic lights in Kamala around 1730 when these guys are headed back from Laem Sing Beach. Some of the stuff one sees on the 'Kamala Racetrack' beggars belief.

Also interesting when the traffic lights aren't working- people just speed un instead of slowing down through the two main junctions.

Its not referred to as "Kamala TV' for nothing!

This lout are Arabs, some have European passports, some come from Africa or Arabia itself.

Additional Armenians, Turks, Bulgarians, Eastern Europeans from countries where things get even more chaotic than here. Phuket is paradis for them.

My impression is that there are more every year. Probably this is the future of Phuket, there will always be plenty of tourism, but the clientele is changing rapidly.

All the young Russian mums, fleeing the Siberian frost and built up illegal structures (kindergartens, nurseries, schools),then the cheap Chinese tourism, the Russian mass tourism with all the simple villagers without manners, the Arabs punks. They expel and replace the Europeans and Anglo-Saxons.

And Phuket attracts these people like a magnet, we know the causes. Island is full despite all the economic problems in Russia and Europe or mismanagement of the authorities here.

Countries such as Costa Rica, Oman, The Lesser Antilles or Namibia show how to do it, if you want real quality tourism.
None of these punks would go there.

What you think why?

@ another steve

The size of the bikes and of course that these happen to be non-Thais.

Thinking more of this, it is actually a very dangerous happening. And as volunteers and residents complain, I am flabbercasted by absence of police action and corrective initiatives of the kathu stations police superintendent. What is the Kathu police superintendent busy with? Not with the hundreds of illegal parking tuk tuks. Not with all the thai and foreigners touts having animals with them to Photograph at banglah rd. Not with continuing local transport scam.

motorcycle rider up on one wheel

===

it's like the Thai youth driving

George The Viking,
I think "Arab punks" et al are driving like locals, not that they introduced such driving style.
Many long term settlers copycat local driving habits of 4 persons on a motorbike etc.

For sure, there is no place in Europe where driving customs are remoniscent of local ones.
Also last time I've been to Moscow - it was more than 15 years ago - nothing on roads comes close to that, at least I haven't seen during 3 days.

What Phuket traffic reminds me is Phnom Penh , central streets, more than 10yrs ago - unimaginable chaos, no rules, "law of larger volume engine" etc.
However , during this time Phnom Penh traffic has improved dramatically, it is going in a way much more orderly manner than in Phuket today.

Costa Rica - example of quality tourism ?

Really ?

Have you actually been there ? Coca Cola bus station is one seriously dangerous place and unavoidable if you want to travel cross country.

Even Manuel Antonio, their poster-boy destination, is a dump. Yes, the natural park is nice and well maintained but to use CR as an example how to attract quality tourism ?

You need to get out more.

If anything, CR is a favorite destination for American sex tourists.

Nowhere else in the world have I seen a room service "menu" listing pictures and details of about 100 women you can order to you room than in this hotel just outside San Jose.

Quality tourism my a**.

PS. In the Philippines CR is used to refer to the toilet (Comfort Room)

While Thai kids can be bad, they are no where near as bad as these French/French speaking north african males. They drive everywhere as if was a racetrack (though their antics would quickly get them banned from any racetrack).

@ Herbert

I was in 1995 and 2002 in Costa Rica, when they went to develope a concept for ecological tourism.

Meanwhile, a quarter of the country is protected zone. They gain a lot of energy from renewable energy sources.

Nature is intact, they have one of the greatest biodiversity in the world.
You can watch pumas and jaguars, as well as dolphines and whales.

In Phuket, there are not even seagulls anymore!

They have the CSR Seal got for Sustainable Tourism (Corporate Social Responsibility). Means fair payment for hotel employees, environmentally friendly disposal of rubbish, etc.

Of course there is also the other side, which you describe, Herbert, but they have a CONCEPT.

Yes they have low quality tourism and special places for them but they are able to offer a concept to attract high quality tourists as well.

This is what I meant.

Btw, CR is called the Swiss of Latin America.

Yes indeed, alas they are French on the passport but are not French. They are living mostly in Patong on the back of the French social welfare, unemployment benefits and drug trafic. They are parasites, Thai authorities should put an eye on.

What's the common denominator in all these stories about crashes and reckless driving? Males. Males infused with a compound that makes them aggressive, careless and posturing. If you want to improve the future, improve the present. With populations numbers exploding, time to start limiting the male birth rate.

TNM,
Imagine where we would be If generations and progress relied upon and followed the teachings of history's great female scientists.

Unfortunately, I just can't name at the moment but I'm sure there must be one?

I have seen these idiots first hand, but it is not limited to Patong or Kamala. The entire west coast road is a dangerous place when they are moving around. Whats worse is that they can rent up to 600cc 'twist-n-go' bikes which are extremely dangerous in inexperienced hands, as any fool can ride one. I have seen these guys and their gals cause accidents .....
