Business flourishes again along the foreshore at Phuket's Kamala beach

Vendors Return Under Umbrellas

Friday, November 14, 2014
PHUKET: Vendors appear to be attempting to return to Phuket's Kamala beach with umbrellas and tables set up on the sand since last week, offering food, drink and tours, souvenirs, surfboards and clothing.

Local authorities in Kamala appear more reluctant than in other municipalities to remove the surge in umbrella stalls along the back-of-beach walkway.

Several beach restaurants at Kamala remain in operation because a court verdict on their long-running dispute with the Kamala council has yet to be resolved.

However, Kamala was cleared of sunbeds and umbrellas and other commercial activities, just like Patong, Surin, Kamala and Kata and all other popular Phuket beaches.

Last week, the vendors moved back.

It's unlikely they will survive but it raises again the issue of who enforces the governing military's rules. Kamala's local council appears to lack the will to enforce the regulations.

Onlookers believe vendors will take advantage at the first opportunity to return to some Phuket beaches the minute that they sense there is a lack of will to enforce the military viewpoint.

Local officials in Kamala seem to think they are immune to the directives of the NCOPO and nobody seems to want to take them on; vendors are encroaching further and further down the beach (even opposite the police station)and the taxi drivers have returned with a venom - even sitting in the shaded police boxes at the traffic lights. It's a complete sham.

This appears to be the way here. A directive comes down and authorities enforce it , but as soon as they turn their back the vendors move back in and try to do as much business as they can . Well , except the beach chairs . In the last week or two since jetskis on Patong were told to moor their craft offshore there has been a group at the very end of North Patong beach who have never followed that directive and park their skis ( about 4 -5 ) on the beach .

A fractured society where the police do not enforce the law, if the military alone must do it then Thailand will not be a democracy for a long time to come, the question must be asked, what is wrong with the police, why won't they do there duties?

Editor Comment:

Kamala Police Station is on public land right near the beach. The officers there have a good reputation. Hard to figure why this is happening.

Same thing in Surin. Vendors taking over the car park again and black taxis everywhere.

There is no enforcement of the rules laid down by the NCPO. These umbrella stands on the side walk turn into beach clubs extending over the surf overnight. In Surin the clubs continue to claim ownership of the beach, renting cushions on "their" beach in front of the clubs. No enforcement means backsliding into the cesspool that was Phuket six months ago.

They're offering surfboards... now now, gotta be careful with that ;-) Surfboards are a no no by the BKK power-wielders. Perhaps they will set-up as refuelling stops for the jet-skis too

I've been witnessing the return of all the Taxi Salas around Rawai and Naiharn as well. I'd takea photo to show as proof to you all but I fear of repercussions.

Umbrellas are going to make a reappearance all around Phuket very soon as per vice Governor.

For some reason in Patong tourists are being told they cannot bring their own umbrellas down onto the beach - interesting

The police have got this wrong, TT, and we hope to correct the situation quickly by asking the police what they are doing by banning personal umbrellas from the beach. At the time, I suggested you do that yourself. Instead, we will have to do it for you.

Me and my family have been to phuket now 40 times and what we have seen there last august was very bad! no umbrealls and sun beds at the beach anymore! no service, no toilets - phuket has lost his charme and beach-live!!!! if there is no beach-live anymore we will not visit phuket in future, we will go to vietnam or burma in future!
