Motorbike riders creep too far forward today and a Western couple decide not to wear helmets: Infringements at three Phuket intersections will be punished

Traffic Laws to be Strictly Enforced

Thursday, July 17, 2014
PHUKET: Traffic law enforcement is to begin at three key Phuket intersections from today as part of a push across Thailand to improve road safety and driving standards.

Cameras at the intersections are to be used so infringement notices can be posted to fine wrongdoers. The push for improved standards on Phuket is part of a project that has nominated 199 intersections in Thailand's 77 provinces as the start.

People who cross lanes, wrong-way ghost motorcycle riders, large vehicles in motorcycle lanes, lights jumpers and motorists who pull up in spaces reserved for bikes are all going to be targetted, the Deputy Commander of the Thai Royal Police announced.

The three intersections where enforcement of traffic laws may finally begin are:

.. the Kor Kaew intersection in Thepkasattri Road, where motorists u-turn for Royal Phuket Marina;

.. the Rajabhat University Intersection on Thepkasattri with the road to Phuket City's KuKu district;

.. and the Chalerprakiat Road (bypass) intersection with the road to Samkong at Tesco Lotus, where underpass construction already complicates the crossing.

It's about time. But look how ineffective the speed cameras are. Does anyone know anyone who has been fine? I drive past them almost everyday and cars fly past me doing over a 100kph.
Surely if they were working, people would know.
But right now, how will putting traffic cameras at Tesco help? It's a complete bodgeup job right now.

At the Kor Kaew intersection in Thepkasattri Road the lights controlling the U Turn are mostly non operational. They need repairing.

Huh, traffic law enforcment at 3 intersections only? I see very often police highway patrol cars, it seems their job is so far only to 'push' influencial people in cars behind them through the messy phuket traffic flow. When start the Highway police traffic division doing their job on the roads? Stopping traffic violators, take in their driving license, fine them ? ( like in other countries)

You would need at least 2000 or more officials to enforce road laws here. The usual 2 or 3 police officers stood at the light change box unnecessarily blowing whistles, the remaining ones to chase the law breakers. All they ever check for here is youngsters with no helmets and at night youngsters with or on drugs. I live very close to the Rajabhat intersection and every night there's an officer there who allows people to jump lights, ride past with no helmets and come the wrong way out of a one way street. All he needs to do is stand therewith a note book and write down all the registration numbers of those breaking any traffic law, but hey it is Thailand after all.

Sop in Thailand: 80 km/h is allowed, cameras are set to photograph at 110+ km/h.

What is really funny is that they think they can actually track anyone down based on a license plate?

"What is really funny is that they think they can actually track anyone down based on a license plate?"

It is really easy: person can not be found or does not pay, car registration will not be renewed.

step in right direction but over reliance on technology how many are not registered or false plates & unlicensed do police remember how to intercept a offender at all, seems all they know is road blocks now it camera technology where civil servants will send out fines and also probably operate the cameras if that's the case where's the police enforcement they will go on with there lazy ways and ease up on the tea money in the current environment.

Tbs,- My wife got a speeding ticket while driving on By Pass road. The ticket show 135km. She has never driving that fast during all our years in Phuket. She went to the police station to complain. In their computer they could see a shadow of another car and believed that car was the speeding one. They immediately cancel the fine.

Ed, you really need to get a reporter down to see the traffic law enforcement Phuket style at Rajabhat junction today, just passed there, absolutely hilarious! Only riders of bikes with no helmets being stopped on one of the 4 roads at the junction, all other 3 roads carry on as normal. Still people jumping the red lights, coming the wrong way out of the one way street, which has 3 police standing on the corner doing diddly squat.
