MARIO SCHATZ telephoned his friends on Friday morning to say that he was in Bangkok. It's expected there will be an intense conversation when they meet tonight about friendship.

Original Report

PHUKET: Friends raised the alarm with police in Krabi province today after a young tourist from Austria went missing on a Phi Phi island beach walk yesterday.

Mario Schatz, 23, is not a drinker or a drug-taker, his three friends told police today.

The young man told his friends yesterday about 2pm that he fancied a walk along Phi Phi's Ao Ton Sai beach. He did not return.

Thirty minutes later, the friends went looking for Mario and at 4pm, with no sign of him, they alerted Tourist Police.

Today they travelled to the Krabi province mainland and alerted regular police in Krabi Town.

The four friends arrived on Phi Phi on March 1 and were due to leave for Bangkok today.

Phi Phi, considered to be a rites-of-passage place to visit by many young people, can be reached by ferry from Phuket or Krabi.

I wonder how many Burmese will be arrested

Seriously though - must be a terrible worry for his family and friends, I hope he is found safe and well very soon.
