Novice Phuket cocaine runner Peter Balmer now expresses regrets

Tears as Phuket Cocaine Mule Faces Five Million Baht Bail

Thursday, May 19, 2011
AMORNRAT Balmer visited her drug-courier husband Peter in Phuket Prison yesterday for the first time, saying later that she found him tearful and remorseful.

She said her Swiss husband cried as he apologised for going on the international drugs mule run to South America without telling her.

Khun Amornrat said she told him to calm down, and consider his position. Mr Balmer was arrested at Phuket International Airport on May 9, carrying in his bag four kilos of cocaine.

Once a carpenter in Switzerland, he had a bad fall that stopped him working and lived on a disability pension until the government cut payments earlier this year.

Khun Amornrat, who caught the bus from the central province of Korat to visit her husband on Phuket, said that a Phuket court had set bail for her husband at five million baht.

While his parents in Switzerland were not wealthy, they were looking at ways that the sum might be raised, she said.

Khun Amornrat is living with her mother in Korat and will have to decide whether to make the move to Phuket if her husband or his family cannot raise the bail money.

She said the couple had been living in Hua Hin, running a small bar from which they derived no income.

They had decided to move to Korat to open a restaurant and try to save some money, but her husband's decision to become a drug courier had left their lives in limbo.

He shouldn't even be offered bail, in such a red-handed nab of a criminal.

@Tbs
I could not agree more - why is there a need to give bail? Pay 5M which after he has run away will be LOST in the system. Make a example of him - 4KG cocaine = how many ruined lives? If it had got out on the streets.
And Peter is shedding a tear or two now and expecting us to feel sorry for him.

Why waste money on bail? This case appears cut and dried and he'll be behind bars for a much longer time than his "freedom" on bail, unless he thinks he can go hide somewhere.

He'd do better getting used to the idea of what his, possibly short, life will be like from now on instead of involving his parents, wife, etc. and making them suffer too.

Sounds strange that bail is a possibility if this crime can lead to the death penalty.

4 Kg of cocaine will cause hardship, pain and suffering to countless families and individuals.

I have little sympathy for this man.

I can't remember the last time I heard of such a large bail set on any criminal in Thailand.

" she found him tearful and remorseful." From earlier reports he is an alkie and in prison you can't get alcohol. That's why he is drizzing..(crying).I don't feel sorry for him or any other drug mule. Once the weight of the drugs is over 1kg,then there should be a mandatory DP imposed. May you never get out, barmy balmer.

I don't know if "4 Kg of cocaine will cause hardship, pain and suffering to countless families and individuals."

In my experience it is normally taken by people who have too much money to play with.

In Europe it is generally the mainstay of well-paid white collar professionals with time to kill over the weekend.

Heroin is a much more dangerous drug.

the cocaine will probably be made into crack cocaine, which is sold very cheaply and is an evil drug that ruins lives.. this man should be made an example of this happening far too much. why give him bail so he can escape back home?
