American envoy W. Patrick Murphy meets Governor Maitree today

Taxis, Jet-Skis and Motorcycles Seen as Phuket's Key Issues

Wednesday, September 24, 2014
PHUKET: American visitors to Phuket could feel more safe under the military government of Thailand than before, Phuket Governor Maitree Intrusud said today.

He was speaking at a meeting with W. Patrick Murphy, the Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy, who is on a two-day visit to the holiday island.

Mr Murphy asked Governor Maitree about three issues: taxi fares, jet-skis and motorcycles.

Fares of taxis on Phuket are still much higher than those in Bangkok. Although confined to zones in Patong, jet-skis remain on Phuket's beaches. Motorcycles are still the reason for too many crashes on Phuket's roads.

On Tuesday, Mr Murphy visited the Commander of Kathu Police Station, Colonel Jirapat Palchanaphan, to discuss safety issues.

Taxis & jet skis are both well publicized topics but motor cycles less so. The issue of helmets has always been present. Also licenses.

The issue of motor cycle rental has never been properly addressed by the authorities. It is another aspect of Phuket's 'black economy'.

It is time those renting out motor cycles be properly registered & regulated. After all it is another business not paying taxes but using public highways to the detriment of others.

No person without a proper motor cycle license should be allowed to hire a motor cycle. They are a danger to themselves & to all other road users.

I am just wondering about the numerous posts on meter taxis asking exorbitant prices, not turning their meter on. Jet skis back on the beach in force, hassling every passer by.And deaths continue as foreigners and Thais take to the roads, earning Thailand to be called the second most dangerous place in the world for road accidents. While I'm sure nearly everyone welcomes the help and endeavors of the army, is there no way to check on these things and finally put an end to them ??? Talk doesn't help.

"Although confined to zones in Patong, jet-skis remain on Phuket's beaches."

Says who? I was almost run over by a 4X4 that was pulling jet-skis off the beach in Karon two days ago.

Why can't officials meet with the owners of the jet-ski and Para-sailors and demand they be regulated in a safe and reasonable manner or they have to go. End of story. Why is it so difficult ?
