It could be time soon to dust off the old racer on Phuket for a spin

UPDATE TAT Targets Tour de France for Thailand: Wheels in Motion, But May Take a Different Turn

Updating All Day, Every Day

A ONE-DAY event is possible in Thailand but it won't be the Tour de France. ''There are discussions to settle in Thailand via a criterium, just like we did in Japan with the 'Saitama Criterium by Le Tour de France','' a Tour spokesperson told Reuters.

Original Report

PHUKET: The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is in talks with Paris-based Amaury Sport Organisation for the possibility of staging the world's biggest cycling race, the Tour de France, in Thailand in 2015, the year when the entire Southeast Asian region will integrate under the ASEAN Economic Community framework.

[The Tour de France now extends beyond France and a version might be possible in Thailand, if not the actual event.]

Thailand's high-level delegation led by TAT's Deputy Governor for Tourism Products and Business, Mrs. Vilaiwan Twichasri, held a preliminary talk with Mr. Jean-Etienne Amaury, Chairman of the Amaury Sport Organisation - the main agency organising the annual Tour de France - in Paris, France on 11 September, 2014, to seek ways of organising such prestigious sporting event in Thailand.

TAT Governor, Mr. Thawatchai Arunyik said, ''More talks are underway, but we expect Thailand to play the perfect host to this esteemed and prominent cycling race as early as in 2015.''

The Tour de France is an annual multiple stage bicycle race, primarily held in France.

The race was first held in 1903 originally just to increase sales for France's L'Auto magazine. Following the inaugural event's tremendous success, the race turned into an annual event and has since become so famous that riders from all over the world make it a must-participate race of a lifetime.

TAT Governor said, ''The Tour de France, being the world's oldest, biggest and most famous international cycling race, is the ultimate hope and dream for all professional cyclists to participate in at least once in a lifetime.

''Thailand has also become a destination that international tourists must visit at least once in their lifetime.

''This makes a perfect combination for the Tour de France, the world's famous bicycling race, to be held in Thailand, the world's famous tourist destination.''

It is a known fact that for cyclists joining the Tour de France, winning or losing the race is not their ultimate goal.

But for the team to complete the entire three-week race, covering more than 3500 kilometres in distance, is the biggest challenge. The competition also requires the teamwork spirit to achieve the goal.

The initiative to organise the Tour de France as part of TAT's plans to develop cycling tourism, which has been around for decades in Thailand. It is also to promote eco-friendly travel and green tourism since cycling is energy-saving and harmless to the environment, as well as promotes good health for the riders.

Mr. Thawatchai added, ''By playing host to a world famous cycling race as the Tour de France, we are saying that Thailand is ready to host any international sporting events of all types and sizes.

''We are saying that Thailand is the place to enjoy sporting events, to enjoy unique natural and cultural experiences, and to share the memorable travel moments with the world.''

April Fools Day comes late this year... Incredible if this idea is true, but would also show the incompetence of those who are trying to do this.

A few details appear to have been omitted and it seems the TAT is thinking more about social riders, not racers.

The 2015 Tour de France will start in Utrecht, Netherlands, on Saturday, July 4th, spending the first three days of racing in the Netherlands. The full route of the twenty-one day race ending in Paris will be announced by Christian Prudhomme, Directeur General of the Tour de France, on the 22nd October 2014. The 2015 race will not leave Europe.

Perhaps the TAT hasn't been told the whole story. It appears as though nobody watched it on tv this year. In any case, the riders would all have to wear wristbands to make sure they won't get lost.

Is it April the 1st today?

Seems like tourism related authorities, with the Tourism Minister herself proudly leading the way, are getting seriously detached from reality at an ever increasing rate.
I have a novel and possibly shocking piece of advice to all these Tourism masterminds:

Talk to the tourists and ask them what they think !

Yes, a novel idea. They could also provide accurate figures on the numbers who come, too.

In one week TAT have had some amazing ideas. I would love to be in the room when the brainstorming is going on because if this is the best they can come up with what must the other ideas be like.

More certainly arrive on their feet than leave. The difference may be a figure they don't wish to publish.

As for the tour de fracus, sounds like a lot of noise without purpose.

Thailand, more amazing than ever!

We don't have any problems with our coverage of this story and if you do, Kurt, feel free to comment on some other site. The paragraph in brackets should have told you what PW thought.

I am in UK now - heading back to Thailand tomorrow. I went into several travel agents out of curiosity. Apart from up market companies like Kuoni selling expensive trips to expensive resorts, there was very little evidence of Thailand being marketed at present; but plenty for Laos, Cambodia & Vietnam.

What next? The summer Olympics? The football World Cup in Pattaya maybe.

So the winner of the Tour has to wear a yellow shirt. Would that be banned by the red shirts?

ASO has just responded, being quite surprised by this astonishing claim by TAT and suspect "Something must have been lost in Translation"

Perhaps the delegation members should be subject to a language test before they make their next "fruitful" trip abroad with taxpayers money.
