PHUKET: A gang fled empty-handed after pulling an ATM from a wall in central Phuket early today, leaving 2,137,600 baht behind.
While the gang carefully used a blowtorch to cut around the ATM at a pharmacy in Baan Manik, along the road from the Heroines Roundabout towards the west coast, they were spotted by passersby.
It's not plain whether the thieves intended to load the ATM onto the pickup and drive off but the alarm was sounded about 3.40am before they could access the cash.
A security camera nearby had been turned away from the ATM.
Police believe the foiled Thalang heist may have been perpetrated by the same gang that pulled a similar job in Krabi over new year, escaping with two million baht.
