Three workers were arrested and fined on Sunday at Karon for setting sunbeds and umbrellas on the sand there, Phuketwan has learned. The people were each fined 500 baht.
Yesterday, a fourth beach worker who attempted to place umbrellas and sunbeds on Ksron beach was arrested and fined 300 baht.
The strict treatment does not apply at neighboring Patong beach, where Phuketwan has been told that the mayor has asked police not to act against illegal beach workers.
Plans at some beaches to compromise by devoting 10 percent of the beaches to umbrellas appear to have not been successful
Phuket Governor Nisit Jansomwong has announced awards for Phuket's best and worst beaches that are to take place in three months, after Prince of Songklha University conducts a research project on Phuket's beaches and the changes that came with the military takeover of Thailand on May 22 last year.
The governor has also told councils to each set up a beach management team and to implement the 10 percent rule or keep sands entirely clear of commerce.
Phuketwan advocates the establishment of an independent Phuket Beach Authority, with the Royal Thai Navy enforcing regulations, removing the problem from the councils who are often obliged to act in support of local voters.
Well done to Kata and Karon. I see a massive improvement including motor bikes not been parked and driven on the footpaths as well as the general cleanliness and management of the beach. Not the same in Patong.
WHY?
