Bangla goes gaga as hundreds participate in today's Phuket tsunami drill

Soi Bangla Walking Street Goes Running in Phuket Tsunami Practice

Tuesday, June 9, 2015
PHUKET: A tsunami drill took place today in Phuket's Tourist Central, Soi Bangla in Patong, with scores running up the walking street as though their lives depended on it.

Beach workers, school children and resort volunteers joined in, going through the motions as if a big wave was about to dump on Phuket as it did in 2004.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation was joined by Royal Thai Navy 3 in today's simulation, which allowed rescue services and ambulances to practice.

Some good comes from drills in that the services involved have the chance to renew their skills.

The best drill of all, though, was the false alarm in April 2012 when virtually everyone in Patong took to the hills. It's to be hoped there are no serious alarms, real or false, in the near future.

I think they were all keen to rent tuk-tuks.

you have to wonder ...if the real deal ever did happen again, would people have the sense to follow a drill that they went through?....I think maybe a small number ...the rest would be in a pure panic

It's the tourists who need reassurance and a gameplan, and it's the tourists who mostly don't get reassurance and a gameplan. The question is: ''Who will wake me up at 3am to tell me where to go?''

Indeed. Cosmetic stuff is easy. Around Khao Lak the memories are stronger and the lessons have been learned. On Phuket? Well, Phuketwan has yet to be convinced. In daylight, with tv and radio working, there are likely to be few problems . . . unless April 2012 is repeated. After dark, especially between midnight and dawn? Tourists should ask that question: ''Look, i don't mean to be depressing, but if another tsunami did happen to come and it came at 3am, who would wake me up? And who would wake them up?''

I lived in Hawaii for many years and they have their share of potential natural disasters that could happen at nay given moment...earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic lava flows....Hawaii is also equipped with the most up to date equipment that can pretty much detect..at least the tsunamis and lava flows way ahead of time...giving precise direction and times of anticipated events...that being said, there are specific sirens that would go off that have a specific "wail" that indicates the upcoming event and it sounds off way way ahead of time..in fact in enough time that people would have time to tune into their radio or tv to see what is happening, what it is, where its coming from and what people need to do to prepare....Now unless this kind of a system is in place here, its anyones guess as to what is going on until it actually happens and by then its too late...and pure panic!

Something like that, sky. If I remember rightly, Hawaii had two tsunamis some 15 years apart - a good reason who eternal vigilance is the only sensible way to be prepared for all eventualities.

And if they run after 7pm to 5am due to a real Tsunami from Bangla into Soi Sans Sabai( the natural escape route) they will be met with a narrow escape route due to excessive motorbike parking ! ! an accident waiting to happen, a death trap
Also what about access for ambulance or the fire services etc ?.
Yes i know the road is privately owned and a huge money spinner for the owners but it should be compulsory purchased by the Government as a matter of diligence, but i wont not count on it.

Phuket's 'Tsunami System' has more holes than swiss cheese. Examples: Lifeguards have no public address system to clear beaches when needed, escape routes blocked by walled-off beach property (Kamala), Tsunami sirens can't be heard at many beaches (Surin). These drills, while slightly better than nothing, are mainly just for show, on par with the(complete lack of) 'marine safety' here. If a major Tsunami hit Phuket today, many, many lives would be needlessly lost.
