A large meeting of tourism-related businesses was being held today

Meetings With Consuls Will Resume

Wednesday, October 21, 2015
PHUKET: Meetings between the Phuket administration and the holiday island's honorary consuls will not just be restored, they will take place every month, Phuket Governor Jamleran Tipayapongtada announced today.

He was speaking at a large gathering of representatives from virtually every branch of tourism on Phuket - including dive businesses, jet-ski operators, tour guides, Marine Police and Tourist Police.

The regular monthly meetings with honorary consuls - generally regarded as being the holiday island's spokespeople for tourists - represents a massive change from the approach of the previous two governors, who ceased the three-monthly forums.

The honorary consul for Germany, Anette Jimenez Hochstetter, welcomed the change in thinking.

''I am absolutely delighted at this wonderful news,'' she said. ''I am sure other honorary consuls will be, too. We will all look forward to these gatherings, and progress.''

Governor Jamleran told the large meeting at Phuket Provincial Hall that the emphasis across the tourism industry on Phuket needed to be on safety and security.

A number of recent issues that made headlines in Thailand or overseas were on the agenda for discussion.

Good going, Governor. This is a very important forum for the people and the government.

Great that we've finally got a Governor who'll listen to what the customer has to say.
Hope he's also 'brave enough' to bring in some changes!

The next governor will hate him for that. Good decision to keep the finger on the pulse of the tourist and farang industry. Only also his might is finite and not governor almighty.

Pleasant news, now the tourists get through their respective Consuls a voice about how touristic Phuket should be reformed.
After all, Phuket exists by the grace of tourism.

Look at the beaches and talk to the tourists and you know what they want, sunbeds and umbrellas. Is it really that simple? Yes it is.

Your first comment, Sven. Could you be a person who depends on sunbeds for a living?
