More than 20 organisations sign on for safety and security on Phuket today

Safety and Security Given Priority at Standing Room Only Seminar to Improve Phuket for Tourists

Monday, June 8, 2015
PHUKET: A seminar on Phuket to encourage the security and safety of tourists concluded today with a three billion baht pledge by the national government to make the holiday island a model for the rest of Thailand.

Interest from private enterprise in the project was so great that it was standing room only at the Royal Phuket City Hotel, with Pol Gen Pichit Kuandechakup and Pol Lt Gen Boonruang Polpanich of the National Legislative Assembly on the podium with Phuket Governor Nisit Jansomwong and others.

Key to the gathering was the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Phuket province and national authorities on public safety and security standards for sustainable tourism. A total of 24 authorities signed up to the MoU.

As well as flood protection systems and flyovers, the budget included 285 million baht for additional security cameras.

General Pichit said that Phuket was chosen ''to be the model for other provinces for safety and security measures for sustainable tourism.

''We believe that Phuket is the province with the highest potential because of its popularity with tourists, its geography and existing management systems.''

He added that safety and security were the keystones for sustainable tourism: ''This is why we decided to sign an MoU on safety and security management.''

285 million baht for cameras... If thats anything like the last contract, we will probably have 4 or 8 non functional cameras which point away from club doorways (and security) and don't work in low light.

It's said that in times past, contractors were asked to keep the invoices for the expensive cameras but actually substitute the good ones with cheaper ones. Surely those days have gone, PM Prayuth?

So finally there might be some funding for the much maligned lifeguards (aka 'lack of'); bring in a couple of Australian experts to do the training as it is my understanding as a Brit that nobody does lifeguarding better than the Aussies.
