PHUKET: A national park staff member who has been selling marijuana to tourists north of Phuket ''for years'' was arrested yesterday in a sting operation.

Agents of Takuapa district chief Manit Pleantong nabbed Katachai Panboontong, 36, on the outskirts of Khao Lak as he tried to make a sale about 6pm.

He looked tearful, video showed, as officers bundled him into a pickup to be taken for further questioning.

Khun Katachai was a member of the staff at Khao Lak National Park, south of the popular holiday destination in Phang Nga province.

Inside a fabric belt around his waist officers found 14,972 baht in cash and 200 grams of marijuana. A small amount of kratom - the illicit natural leaf - was found in his Yamaha Fino.

''Khun Katachai said he had been selling marijuana to tourists for years,'' one of the officers told Phuketwan ''He usually sold reefers [marijuana cigarettes] at 1000 baht each.''

District officer Manit has won high praise and the Phuketwan Person of the year Award for 2014 for sparking a grassroots movement against the human trafficking of Rohingya and Bangladeshis along the Andaman coast of Thailand, where trading in people had become an industry second only to tourism.

A 24-hour human trafficking checkpoint manned by volunteers on the main road north of the town of Takuapa has forced traffickers and drug smugglers to consider other routes. Local police now join the volunteers in manning the checkpoint.

Tourists used to taking small amounts of illegal drugs without repercussions are sometimes unaware of Thailand's zero tolerance to marijuana and other ''party'' drugs.

He should go to jail for selling the crappiest pot ever grown for 1000 baht a gram.

He should have been arrested for massive overcharging. B1000 for one smoke? That's criminal.

@The Mary Jane Mare and @Jambo

He should go to jail for selling marijuana, this is illegal in Thailand, nothing to do with overcharging his customers

Hello Paul,
Do you believe marijuana is inherently evil - as demonized in much of the "advanced" world like Thailand and Malaysia? If you do, I've got a nice plot of land in Saskatchewan (in a Canadian prairie province - flat as the Flat Earth Society Paul) to sell you for 10 dollars Canadian, or your best offer. It includes a functioning outhouse with a view of tall grass, aka wheat.

I'll also send you an E copy of 1937's still-current "Reefer Madness" for you to peruse, and to stoke your fire a little more.

Hemp is useful - for rope, clothes and such. Even Christopher Columbus thought so.. LOL

Some children with terrible seizures have found relieve with marijuana - not the type that gets you high though Paul. That the family had to move from (red-neck-ish) Texas to Colorado to access the medication for their sick daughter speaks volumes (too).

Best

I think Paul should be deported for being such a twit. And yeah, $30 a reefer should carry an extra charge.

Seriously Paul, what are you smoking? 1,000 baht for a reefer?

Pot is illegal in Thailand due to the USA imposing its will on the world many years ago... well, now its legal in the USA so its only a matter of time for the rest of the world to catch up once again...

I say let this good ranger man go free. He hurt nobody, its not his fault that herb in Thailand is not what it used to be.... no overpriced and of low quality.

Pro-illegal drug use advocates certainly are well represented among the expat community on Phuket.

A place that has a thriving sex industry, widespread illegal drug use and pathetic law enforcement naturally appeals to certain type of people.

Those who like to bend and break the law feel right at home here. I however would leave this dump in a heartbeat if it was possible without a serious financial loss.
