PHUKET: Mystery surrounds yesterday's surprise cancellation of the Phuket Pride Grand Parade, which was due to proceed as usual along Patong's beach road at 3pm. Hundreds of residents and tourists headed for the seashore to view the spangles and glitter.
But this year, there was not a single float. Usually, the parade is a prominent way of promoting tolerance and other lifestyles on Phuket. Safe Sex is always part of the message.
Those who were left standing on the kerb were mightily disappointed not the see the parade, a highlight of Phuket Pride Week for 10 years. The only explanation came in a brief sentence on the Phuket Pride Facebook site:
''IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT. We have been informed by the bar owners of Soi Paradise that they will not be running a Grand Parade today.''
It is believed no effort was made to contact the Phuket media so that people would have been saved unnecessary time spent waiting for the parade.
The cancellation came the day after Patong elected a new mayor, former Democrat MP Chalermlak Kebsub, 50, who says she hopes to introduce changes to the priorities of the local council.

Och aye, could this be the beginnings of the tastes of things to come? No more of this, no more of that, no more wealthy tourists and no more l-ing TAT.
