A deal is done to make Phuket's Racha island beautiful once again

Racha Revival Begins With Environmental Accord and Phuket Governor's Praise

Sunday, July 5, 2015
PHUKET: ALL resorts and restaurants on Racha island have signed an environmental accord that Phuket Governor Nisit Jansomwong believes has the potential to solve the pollution problems there.

''Five months of talking have provided agreement on a road map,'' he said yesterday. ''The island's environmental issues can be solved cooperatively.''

Even the most recalcitrant resort on Racha has joined three other resorts and three restaurants in the deal that has the potential to make the island a natural paradise once more.

Included in the MoU, signed yesterday and witnessed by a large number of Phuket offiicals are declarations:

.. that tourists are simply not allowed to dump garbage in the sea;

.. the mutual aim is to make sure no bad water is passed to the sea;

.. recycling of trash is to be applied by all Racha businesses;

.. Rawai council on Phuket will take care of disposing of the island's waste;

.. Racha businesses have to pay Rawai council for disposing of the garbage;

.. every business is responsible for maintaining a succession of ponds to clear water before it reaches the ocean.

Sarit Jandee, president of the Racha Island Preservation Committee, was full of praise for the agreement and said it was a great start.

Great news.

Now they have signed up, let's hope they stick to their commitments.

I like the first one - Blaming the tourists for dumping rubbish in the sea. I can swear, I have never witnessed a Westerner in over 10 years, throw rubbish into the sea. I can't say the same about the locals though.

But hey, its easy to blame the people who can't defend themselves.

Editor Comment:

I would have thought a ban on tourists dumping garbage in the sea includes people from all over, Tbs, including Thailand, Europe, Korea and China. If all tourists are controlled, then surely the problem is solved. If Westerners are indeed perfect already, then this is a learned habit that can also be inculcated in others.

Another way to avoid enforcing laws that already exist. Typical approach sadly... negotiate, compromise and deliver nothing serious, enforceable or tangible. No doubt all are involved are patting themselves on the back.

.." a deal is done to make Racha island beautiful once again"..
Why they polluted it first for such long time? And why it took 5 months(!) to reach a agreement. Are there no thai environment laws they have to comply with? ( no agreements among themselves) Yes, they all patting themselves now,let us wait and see 1 year, or it is real and not just lip service for the show.
