Poll Backs Punishment for Rohingya Traffickers, Corrupt Thai Authorities

Sunday, May 10, 2015
PHUKET: A survey by Suan Dusit Rajabhat University has found that the discovery of graves of Rohingya people in the southern province of Songkhla had stirred shock and compassion among Thai people to the point that tough actions against wrongdoers had been recommended.

The survey focused on main topics namely Thai people's reaction to the report of the plight of Rohingya people, their view of the country's image and their suggestions on the matter.

When asked how they feel upon learning about the plight of Rohingya people, the majority of the respondents admitted that they were sad and sympathetic to the Rohingya people undergoing hardships in foreign countries and wish that authorities bring the culprits to justice as soon as possible.

With regard to the matter's repercussions on the country, most of the respondents said the reports on the Rohingya people's misfortunes would unavoidably affect the country's image.

As for suggestions regarding the problem, the respondents are of the opinion that the government should issue short-term and long-term solutions and closely cooperate with neighboring countries to address the problem.

More than half of them also suggested that the government handle the issue through Section 44 so that the problem can be solved without delay.

The results of the poll were compiled from the answers of 1386 people across the country between May 4 and 9.

Dear Ed

This seems like a very significant poll result.

Is the Thai language media still devoting a reasonable amount of coverage to this developing story?

There's unprecedented interest in the Rohingya issue in Thailand now. Strangely, a lot of chatter now centres on whether the word is Rohingya with a g or Rohinya without a g. You will have also seen that 500 boatpeople have just arrived in Aceh, which means there will probably be another seat required at the regional talks.

Dear Ed

Thank you for that insight.

I have asked Thai friends and acquaintances in recent months on their attitudes to human trafficking and slavery in Thailand. A typical response would be that it is a story that does not really interest them. They might refer to a recent story about a lone Thai schoolgirl who was murdered or to a Thai sports coach who assaulted one of his students as being more interesting stories.

These were just anecdotes but the survey you refer to is really interesting. As you have pointed out in the past Ed, only the Thais can change the Thais.

To be fair, a single traffic fatality in Perth, Western Australia might push 500,000 deaths in another country off the front page of a Perth paper. I note that similar comments have been made by some of your other readers in relation to the media in their respective cities in the "West."

It would be interesting to see the results of a poll on whether or not the Royal Thai Navy should drop its criminal defamation charges against you and Khun Chutima.

Has there been much coverage in the Thai language media about the criminal defamation charges that you now face?

I hope you do not mind these questions Ed. Sincerely

I think you're one zero out in your figures, Ian. 500,000 deaths would be big news everywhere. But 50,000 deaths . . . that would be a big story, too, everywhere. In reality, there was a time when 5000 deaths in any other country did not matter as much as one death around the corner. I can remember a huge headline AUSTRALIAN AMONG DEAD when about 60 people perished in a Manila hotel blaze. Fortunately, times have (mostly) changed. There is a tipping point and eventually, wrongful and unjust treatment does make big news, wherever it occurs. More people now feel part of one world. As Martin Luther King said - and a new generation now believes - Injustice anywhere is a threat to Justice everywhere. Only the selfish think otherwise.

Hi Ed
Yes, the arrival of 500 Rohingya boat people in Aceh, Indonesia made the Australian Broadcasting Commission TV news.

The politics of self-interest might see greater input from Australia as boats get closer to Australian shores

The public expression of disdain for inhumane illegal activity is quite different than the reality. The accused public officials who have recently been named were all well known in their respective communities. Friends, families and many of the local residents all profited from the illegal activity that occurred over a number of years. It was not a secret. Human rights workers were clear in their statements that the illegal activity required official support. Yet, during all those years, no one from Bangkok really investigated, and no one from the local community spoke up. None of the political activists from either side of the Thai political divide said anything. I'm sorry, but silence during the period when the illegal activity occurred was in effect tacit support for the activity. It took foreign governments and foreign human rights workers to expose these activities. Those foreign advocates paid the price with intimidation and physical assaults. This is why the foreign governments are not as "understanding" of the situation as the Thai national government desires.

To look at the issue positively, this government appears to be committed to ending the process after years and years of coverups by governments of both colors. We're grateful for the change. The world should be, too.
