Police with Somboon Seawang and the large Ranong drugs haul

Police North of Phuket Nab 100 Million Baht Drugs Haul

Saturday, August 23, 2014
PHUKET: One of the largest hauls of drugs in the Andaman region came yesterday with police arresting a man with methamphetamines valued at 100 million baht.

Somboon Seawang, 23, was held by officers in Ranong, the Thai-Burma port north of Phuket, after a sting.

Caught when police tried to buy 15 packs of ya baheach containing 2000 tablets, a visit to Khun Somboon's room at the Ranong Gardens hotel revealed packs containing 400,000 tablets.

The drugs were destined for distribution in Ranong, and the neighboring provinces of Phang Nga and Phuket, officers said.

The haul was estimated to have a street value of 100 million baht. Police also took possession of three telephones, three bank books and an ATM card.

The scale of drugs distribution & presumably consumption (no supply without demand) is quite staggering.

It has become such big money business, can it ever be realistically stopped?

It makes me wonder if those who suggest legalizing & controlling it might have a point. I am not if favor, but ...!?

The so-called 'war on drugs' in Thailand has been a miserable failure as in so many other countries. And the 'yaa-baa' version of speed is, as far as I am aware, available in virtually every nook and cranny in this country, no matter how many 'seizures' are made. However, there is no way anyone in their right mind could seriously contemplate legalizing this particularly pernicious drug or it's more potent and more expensive cousin 'ice'. But the issue of marihuana is another matter altogether. Thailand, or rather parts of the upper NE of Thailand, once produced one of the finest strains in the world. But that more or less ceased many years ago to be replaced by very inferior compressed low grade rubbish.

A personal use defense is out of the question, unfortunately the quantity infers demand for this contraband must be limitless and highly profitable, this guy will be pension age when he gets out and I suspect he's just a small distribution cog in a very large organized crime machine.
