Manat said that the 14 million baht, whose transactions were documented in bank slips, was related to bullfighting gambling

So funny! Does he really think anyone is going to buy into that as an excuse?

Posted by Logic on June 4, 2015 09:59

Editor Comment:

Are you suggesting it's a load of bull? Surely not. I actually thought gambling was illegal but if muay thai betting is an exception, bullfighting must be another one. I am sure he wouldn't do anything illegal. Everyone who dons a military uniform is honorable and beyond reproach.

Hi Logic

You might be hard pressed to find anyone who believes the explanation of winnings on bullfights. I think I even detect some sarcasm in Ed's comment to you.

I understand that suspected criminals in my country try to explain away "unexplained wealth" as coming from horse racing but they have difficulty remembering the names of the horses they backed.

Manat (aka Manus aka Manas) Kongpan has been mentioned in many news reports over the past 11 years. It is worthwhile reading about him.

When a thai general can make 14 million with, of course legal, bullfighting gambling, than where I have to go to try my luck the same way?
I am sure a thai general never will do some illegal gambling, or any other illegal activities. The arrest warrant for this top general must be sure a 'misunderstanding'.

Hello Logic

Did you look at the Bangkok Post story on the net?

There is a picture if Manat in uniform but missing his 3 stars of a Lt General.

The story says that in a raid on some other suspects authorities found slips providing evidence that the suspects transferred the 14 million baht to Manat. The story goes on to say that the other suspects were not involved in bullfight gambling.

I gather that the skeptical folks at the Bangkok Post don't accept Manat's story.

It will be interesting to learn more about this fellow and his career.

I would not bet on a bullfight but if I had to risk my money it would be on the matador and not the bull. I would not bet a single dollar or a single baht on the accuracy of a statement that attributes the 14 million baht transfers to bullfight gambling.

Correction: Khun Manat does not have stars on his right shoulder but they are on his left shoulder (which was obscured in the Bangkok Post picture). Sorry, I got it wrong! I am too used to the uniforms of other armies where stars and pips etc appear on both shoulders.

Yes, I am a farang. I do make errors. I admit it when I learn that I made an error.

Hi Ian & Ed: I think we all share the same sentiments on this story. & you are so right that persons accused of illegal activities in our own countries often claim unexplained wealth comes from gambling whether horse or dog racing, casinos or whatever. I love the way puts it "a load of bull". More than likely.

But in light of recent articles on BBC ref FIFA corruption & now athletics doping stretching back decades, the whole world is at it! It appears that very few people get rich legally or cleanly.
