That's a real s**t happening now in Sydney, people appears to be well prepared with flags bearing messages etc.
And as far as I can understand that is the pretty heart of Sydney CBD, Opera house nearby etc.

Hope Australian police and other state power agencies will get through well

The Opera House is some distance away but the cafe is certainly in the heart of Sydney. Being allies of the US, right or wrong, makes Australia a target for terrorists. Let's hope madmen are not involved.

Al Jazeera have a feed from channel 7 Australia and are showing the siege live. The number of hostages is put at 'up to 13 people'. Reports of other buildings affected and an unidentified package at the opera house are just that - reports.

Sydney has prepared for such a situation for a many years. You could not have better resources ready to handle this situation under the leadership of Police Comm Scipione. He is one of those few people who you know that no matter what the situation, it will be dealt with appropriately.

Editor Comment:

What it does is prove conclusively that the threat is unlikely to be executed where people expect it - overseas - but in the heart of the places Westerners call home. Checks under cars for bombs are a waste of energy.

Well 3 hostages have now escaped so they will be able to provide detail of what's going on.

Pete, the bomb squad deal with suspect packages almost daily in Sydney. The amount of times people just forget a bag or walk off and leave something behind is unbelievable.
I was once in a building where the bomb squad robot x rayed a package, fired a few shots into it and eventually rescued the old vacuum cleaner from the plastic bag.

Nice to know one only needs 200 million baht to live as a 'Commoner'.

By the way checking under cars these days DOES save lives, Northern Ireland proved that. 60 seconds to check is not a waste of energy by any means.

Comparisons with Norhern Ireland in the '70s would be laughable. Totally different.

The one certain outcome of this Sydney event will be a complete overreaction from the Government, leading to a loss of more freedoms and liberties for the average battler. We'll see even more militarization of the police and from the left we'll have the blame laid at the feet of the racist or Islamophobe Australian they believe is hiding in every second closet.

We'll then have 6 months of debate where the usual media moralists and self-anointed social saviours will ear-bash us to death telling us what is wrong with Australia.

Editor Comment:

You're probably right. The Australian government misreads most things and is about 30 years behind the rest of the world. Both sides of politics have forsaken principle for self-preservation. It's pathetic to watch. There is plenty wrong with Australia, especially in Canberra.

With all this Radical Islamist activity, what is to Stop a Country from asking all Islamist Muslims to leave, I know its a radical step, but what can a country do Allan, any Ideas.

Posted by Gregg P.Cornell on December 15, 2014 16:11

Editor Comment:

A country can ignore radical suggestions and learn the importance of tolerance. Radicalism flourishes when intolerance and bigotry are easy to find in everyday life, when equal opportunity and freedom of religion are espoused but not practiced. The problems have their roots with bad ideas built around isolation and a fortress mentality.

Apart from 'Islamist Muslims', just what other Muslims are there ? 'Judaic Muslims' ?

We should all be learning to respect and understand each other and not play into the hands of nutters preaching intolerance and ignorance.

Expats should be acutely aware of this.

R.I.P. to the victims of this horrible horrible incident. Tragic.
