I took the Tiger Air Philippines (actually SEAir) flight from Phuket to Manila on Sep 15th - 11 PAX onboard, delayed 45min.

Return flight on Sep 21st had 44 PAX, delayed 1hr.

Paid a total of only THB 2780.

The weird thing is that it arrives and departs at the Domestic (T4) terminal in Manila. They've added a single immigration counter and separated a small space to accommodate this.

I heard from quite a few passengers that they had mistakenly gone to T3 first where most Tiger Air flights in Manila depart from.

If you search for those flights, you will see that none are available after October.

It would appear as if the new service is being cancelled due to low passenger numbers.

It's a shame because Manila is a welcome alternative to direct visa-run destinations from Phuket and with a bit more publicity I believe the flights would be financially viable.

With Cebu Pacific offering the same service at virtually the same time of day (night, actually) there's plenty of competition though.

Editor Comment:

Speculative flights are a feature of Phuket. Direct to Manila seems great value for visa runners but probably won't become truly popular until Phuket resorts employ many more English-speaking Philippines workers after 2015.

I agree.

My best guess is that there are about 2500 Filipinos residing on Phuket at the moment and the fact that Philippine immigration has very strict and arbitrary policies in place to prevent Filipinos from departing has created a situation where many Filipinos are afraid to visit their home country because of the very real possibility of not being let out again.

I've even spoken to the highest ranking Philippine immigration officer working on the field, Mr Manahan about this and even he declined to give clear guidelines as to what is or is not required.

There is a man called Al Pascua "working" at NAIA airport who will "help" Filipinos with such issues for a fee of PHP 20.000.

As if life was not already difficult enough in the Philippines.
