I like the idea of Monday morning beach clean up, could involve government officials and all that make money from tourism.
Remember the time when chamlong was governor of Bangkok and that was his Monday morning routine.

So, the National Council for Peace and Order is telling journalists not to ask the PM any provocative questions?

The author George Orwell jumps into one's mind when reading a story like that about a government council with a name like that.

In some countries the theory goes that governments serve the people. In other countries the theory is that people serve the government. It is just my humble opinion but I think that the first theory is more consistent with patriotism.

I like provocative questions within reason. They keep people accountable which in turn helps make them responsible.

I also see from another page of the Phuketwan website that the Cambodian Government (which happens to be headed by a former Khmer Rouge Commander) has a proposed law that would require NGOs to report to the government on their activities and finances. I further note that 16 international human rights groups have expressed concern that this would muzzle criticism of the government.

One could be forgiven for thinking that the Thai authorities admire the Cambodians so very much that they wish to follow the lead of Cambodia.

It was only a few short decades ago that the Pol Pot regime exterminated one third of the Cambodian population. The intellectuals, the teachers, the journalists and the professionals were targeted. The intellectual head of the country was decapitated.

Pol Pot of course picked up his radical communist ideas in France which he duly imported to Cambodia. He imported ideas and created a regime that people like George Orwell had warned about.

Anyway, being the observant individual that I am, I concluded pretty quickly that the Pol Pot experiment of creating a Utopia was a dismal failure.

Now the Thai PM seems reasonably enthusiastic about muzzling the media. Thankfully he has not yet gone as far as Pol Pot by exterminating journalists and intellectuals but it is open to ask the question of where he intends his actions to head.

A free Thailand would be good for Thailand and good for the world. I do not see any benefits whatsoever in Thailand trying to copy its neighbors of Cambodia and Burma in crushing human rights and responsible free speech. A patriotic government would protect human rights and free speech.
