The Tsunami escape route signs have been taken down along Soi Sansabai in Patong despite being mentioned clearly as a major escape route in several government documents. Any chances they are being erected again, or does it contradict too much with the 4 rows of parked motorcycles cash machine?

Thais generally looks this morning Mai Sabai, and by far not Mai Pen Rai - their immediate concern is of the impact on tourism - that was the same with Bangkok Thais whom I spoke yesterday.

My opinion, that is based on ,again, conversations with so many friends and acquaintances last evening, who inquired What's Going On,and most of whom have been in Thailand at least once,is that would they plan a trip to the Kingdom, they certainly would not cancel it,if only carved out Bangkok or other crowded places off itinerary, merely for psychological comfort.

I expect certainly if not complete immunity, then quite resilience of European market against such events. Everyone understands that as one-off event it has no impact on Southern beach destinations, and that one of principal goals was to invoke mayhem and panic, and tarnish existing regime - even if we would never get to know who is behind the terror act and with what agenda.

Chinese market, and similar, as opposite, can be quite sensitive to such events, especially in a short term.
That may translates into stagnant figures of arrival in Q3 and may be Q4,and potentially Q1,but except not receiving some planned receipts,it will be still a huge mass of tourist, even if on par with 2014 or 2013,if some drop will realize.

People in Europe well understand that to cut their trip will play in hands of perpetrators, and have no relation to their actual security or quality of holidays.
Those foreigners with a ties and knowledge of Thailand should take a taxi to explain it to others who may be not understand well situation, especially ,say, what is a distance between Bangkok and Phuket (roughly 1,000km).

Already there are articles appearing questioning safety in Thailand. All week certain Australian media have been running articles about the high death rate in Thailand for Australians. Today it has changed to 'is Thailand a safe destination?' There will be massive damage to the tourist industry from this and with the economy already faltering, this event was obviously planned to do massive damage to Thailand.

Editor Comment:

The high death rate is a hoary old beatup. Sad if it's getting a rerun. Most Aussies know it's not true. One random bomb is a tragedy but not a travel alert. Until more is known, nothing should change.

"Is Australia still safe destination for tourists to visit?
How we do protect tourists from proliferating King Punch culture?
Can we protect visitors from serial hooliganism both by white machoists and Asian immigrants?
XXX kangaroos jumped onto Australian roads last year, should you move around on feet or is it still safe to rent a car?
During last 3 year YY sq.km of Greater Sydney was flooded for in total ZZ days,is it still possible to have safe and enjoyable holidays in Australia?"

As for the suspected man,it would be absolutely despicable if that would appear to be a kind of fanatic from Europe,US or Australia, who acting by his agenda, has brought such mayhem and sufferings yesterday.

The Bangkok terrorist bomb will impact tourism from China, Hong Kong and Singapore. Hong Kong has issued travel warning and other Asian countries is expected to do the same. In my point of view we should not be scared. Probability to become a victim for terrorism is minimal compered to other hassards as drunk driving accidents.Sad to see a foreigner is one of the suspects. 17 CCTV cameras on the site have given the police detailed information to solve the crime.

EU Countries are changing their travel advisories for Thailand. It is said, that it was the first time that trouble in Thailand targeted tourists deliberately. (I guess they forgot the grenades launched at the subway station entrance from the reds while protesting some years ago...)

Europeans will think what to do over christmas. Maybe a one off. Maybe only a dent in arrivals. It is important that, like in Bali, there are no follow ups.

Sue,
its the boxing kangaroos you have to look out for. I saw 3 the other night jumping across the Sydney Harbour Bridge probably on their way to Taronga Zoo after a night out.

Lena,

a big bulk of XMas holidays have been alreday booked and paid, it is not so easy to cancel it.

Last year in November it was absolutely impossible to find a decent hotel in Phuket or vicinity for Christmas and New Year Eve dates, so I don't think XMas dates will be underfilled.

Late bookers category until then will already forget these issues.

Unless they will not proliferate - I hope they will not.

What is under risk various Chinese breaks that are coming soon.

"One random bomb is a tragedy but not a travel alert. Until more is known, nothing should change."

If I listened-heeded Thailand travel warnings issued in Canada - I would never have taken my last 10 trips to Thailand.

What does that say? Either Canada is too cautious, or I'm too stupid to listen to the constant travel advisories - it's likely a combination of the two eh?

..weaker THB will mitigate effect of shifting the Demand curve downward because of perception of safety issues by potential customers - thus bringing in larger number of those who are ready to pay cheaper price in USD/EUR.
