This government seems to be very keen to comment on behalf of foreign dignitaries in regard to what they supposedly think of Thailand.

I'd much rather hear it from the horses' mouth but they remain silent. Most likely adhering to the old saying of

" If you have nothing good to say, better say nothing "

A Phuket dolphinarium is a negative thing to add to Phuket tourist industry, as abroad people realize it is not good, same like jet skies. Different, but same same.

@ Duncan

I've made the same mistake myself and now it feels like a ball chained to my ankle. Can't leave without a serious financial loss and nobody's interested in buying.

If you refuse to give in to corruption, your chances of succeeding in operating a business here are awfully low. If you do give in, the bloodletting never stops. The deeper you fall into the pit of corruption by means of "favors" given, the more you have to lose. Thus the "service fees" increase accordingly.

Fight it and you find yourself deported on some pretense or your business accidentally catches fire.

I did cave in by just throwing in the towel and wanting to leave. The odds are stacked against foreign business operators to such a degree it beggars belief how I ever thought differently.

Not my proudest moment in life.

As to being greng jai, I would imagine that a CEO of a company which has a couple of billion USD invested in Thailand, most in non-portable assets, will have other reasons not to infuriate a military dictator of the very country where their investment is.

@ Duncan & Herbert: I also learned this lesson, not in Thailand, but in squeaky clean Singapore 20 years ago. I was asked by a major player in the marine industry to set up a subsidiary company to provide senior marine qualifications, expertise & support. I got plenty verbal encouragement but it did not extend to practical financial or advisory assistance. I realized the Singaporean Chinese were quite simply taking the proverbial wanting everything for nothing, so I cut my losses which were small before I became too immersed & quit while I was fractionally behind. Lesson learned - don't do business in Asia unless you are a big multi national with significant clout.
