Today while sitting in restaurant I first time saw wasps in Phuket, and generally in Thailand, similar liek in Europe. They were real nuisance when you're having a meal.
I've seen, surely a lot of other flying insects in Thailand, incl. Giant Bees, Flying Cockroaches etc., but not classic wasps.

I am wondering whether that restaurant is an isolated areal for wasps, or they were mostly exterminated, so that's why I never came across, and that meaning the restaurant failed with proper smoking or applying chemicals to get rid off them.

Has anyone sees classic wasps in Phuket? How do you exterminate them here if they violate your comfort of dining alfresco?

@Sue...In Europe we use extra virgin olive oil, just drip a bit on their wings and then they can't fly and will pacified until you have finished your meal. Extra virgin olive oil is so cheap, so just bring a litre with you when you go out ....what you did not use to pacify the wasps with you can just pour back in your car's tank and drive merrily home.

Sailor,
Where I live the wasps are trained to pick olives off the tree and deposit them in your fuel tank. The only problem yet to be solved is how to stop the pips being fired out the exhaust towards the windscreen of the car travelling behind.

@Sailor

unfortunately, that restaurant in Phuket doesn't serve extra virgin love oil, so such remedy is out question. What they serve is ubiquitous mix of refined olive oil and water, marketed under trade name "Olive Oil".

I am compiling a negative review on that restaurant now, and considering whether to mention that wasp issue on sidelines. But before that I would like better understand whether they failed with smoking out wasps, or this was just unexpected event beyond what can be reasonably expected from them.

Yesterday got a minor sting by wasp there, so just don't want it to be like "got stung by the wasp, then wrote negative review on the whole meal" :D

Sue,
I believe the waspinator did arrive but saw the 'no smoking' sign and left.

He did promise more in that garden for feeding,
But that wasp carelessly bit you and laughed while you were bleeding
But he tried his best to remove those ol' bees,
It's hard to blame you Sue, cause you'll always be a woman to me.

...Manowar, same as you to your online forum-buddees of major Australian publication XXXXX on all-the-woman-needs-to-know stuff ;)

But if no one ever saw before classic wasps in Phuket, it could be some foreign invasion of species, that imported in someone's suitcase, and can be a threat to local Eco-balance. Never seen in HKT they check suitcases for wasps, in similar manner as Australia / NZ checkat entry points for fruit, plants and foreign mosquitos. Probably , need to ask in a kind of provincial wildlife department whether there are should native wasps in Phuket.

Posted by Sue on January 5, 2015 18:12

Editor Comment:

Definitely native wasps in Phang Nga so probably also on Phuket.

Sue,
It is disappointing and I'm sure many can appreciate your situation, where you go out for the night to get some good food, good service and when you get home you're surprised that somehow you acquired an unwanted little prick.
