The red box sos call point on Patong beach: more may be coming

Phuket's Tourists See Red and That's Time for Police Action in Patong

Sunday, February 1, 2015
PHUKET: A bright red box on Phuket's Patong beach foreshore could be the first of many if the SOS system works.

People who wish to quickly alert police to problems can push a button that connects them quickly to police, with a camera in the box so police can see who they are talking to.

A light on top of the box also alerts people nearby that an emergency call is being made.

The first box, opposite the Banthai Beach Resort and Spa, has produced calls from tourists about lost property so far since it went in earlier this month.

An announcement on the future provision of more red boxes is expected later this week.

Great idea but I think they need to make it clear it is only for serious crime, robbery etc otherwise it will just be busy all the time. Do they want people reporting lost property?

Now they just need to hire somebody to answer the calls.

The flashing light may attract the attention of the culprits who would love to kick you to death, will the receiver be a multi linguist? or a sleepy constable on the graveyard shift think this idea will require some considerable fine tuning after a trial period.
