Suwat Seajong, 62, gave himself up to Phuket police early today

Phuket's Road Rage Killer Surrenders to Police on Advice of a Friend

Sunday, November 2, 2014
PHUKET: The man who shot dead a motorcycle taxi driver in a fit of road rage in Phuket's main street on Thursday surrendered to police this morning.

Suwat Seajong, 62, gave himself up at Phuket City Police Station.

He confessed to the killing, officers said later.

Khun Suwat told police that the motorcycle driver, Chaleaw Piyapanikul, 47, was swearing in the traffic along Thepkasattri Road that morning, even lifting his helmet at one point and saying ''F***'' directly at Khun Suwat.

After blaring his horn continuously, Khun Chaleaw ordered his 10-year-old son off the motorcycle at the red lights at the the Kuku intersection in Phuket City.

Khun Suwat said Khun Chaleaw sore at him some more.

Khun Suwat said he could stand it no longer so pulled the handgun from his belt and emptied its contents into the foul-mouthed taxi driver as the boy looked on.

He then rode off, tossing the gun into a grassy field as he went. He laid low in Koh Sireh, east of Phuket City, for two days then returned to his own home in Baan Ta Rua, near the Heroines Monument.

A friend he trusted advised him to surrender to police, so this morning he gave himself up.

Police have yet to disclose why Khun Suwat carried the weapon or how he came by it.

Phuket's Police Commander,Major General Pachara Boonyasit, has noted the large number of guns and knives being carried and sometimes used on Phuket and aims to reduce the number.

Khun Suwat was being questioned at length at Phuket City Police Station and will most likely take part in a reenactment of the crime at some stage, although police already have graphic security camera footage of the killing.

Seems like a nasty man by all accounts- best he is off the streets. To gun someone down over a few swear words is pathetic.

"Stick & stones will break your bones but names will never hurt you"

But not in Phuket! The whole island needs a course in anger management.

More worrying is the prevalence of guns & knives, not just the willingness to use them. They need to have an organized campaign of road blocks for a considerable period of time & search every vehicle thoroughly. Anyone carrying should be arrested & their vehicle confiscated. Zero tolerance.

This is getting huge coverage around the world after the murder of the young British couple got the world's focus. Never mind tourism, Thailand's image is becoming tarnished.

I have long wondered what is is about Thais that makes them fly into random, deadly rages at the slightest provocation.

That's a wildly unfair denigration of a nation, Barry, and totally unreasonable. If you observe the news you will find plenty of cases where anger and frustration boil over into violence everywhere. Selective characterisation is a serious problem. You should deal with it.

If a suspect has confessed to a crime, why the re-enactment? Do the police dictate what and how to do it, as well might have been the case in the Khao Tao murders? Think of the 10 year old son, who obviously won't take part in the re-enactment, but will likely hear about it from onlookers ? hasn't he been through enough? The murderer already has a police mugshot which would signify he is a former criminal and has now confessed to murder, so how much would be based on the outcome of the re-enactment when the case goes to trial? Ed, do you know if such re-enactments are required by law?

Editor Comment:

Suspects can recant so going through a reenactment adds to the weight of evidence and helps to confirm the facts in the minds of investigators. I doubt that it would be raised with the boy. People are not that insensitive. Let's hope he is getting proper attention.

@ Logic. You got it wrong. Phuket's version is, " Sticks and stones may break my bones, but guns and knives excite me."

I think a reenactment is entirely not needed in this case since the entire event was captured on cctv.
