Phuketwan on a pro Prem protest
YELLOW shirts appeared again on Phuket City streets today as demonstrators marched in support of Privy Council President Prem Tinsulanonda.
The former General was accused almost a week ago of being ''the invisible hand'' behind the 2006 army coup that led to the downfall and disgrace of Thai Rak Thai powerhouse Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
But the accusation, made by Mr Thaksin from exile as his red-shirted supporters protested in Bangkok's streets, failed to impress General Prem's fans.
They came from six southern provinces to Phuket today for a protest march that began at Queen Sirikit Park, near the Tourism Authority of Thailand office, and meandered through Phuket City before ending at Provincial Hall.
There, the Governor, Wichai Praisa-Ngob, counselled the 300 marchers against invading the local airport. The best option, he said, was to take their problems to him.
The parade included many children and at no stage threatened to curtail Phuket's tourist industry in the way the three-day blockade of the local airport did in August last year.
The governor accepted a document from protest leaders and said he would pass it on to the PM's office in Bangkok.
A Phuket downpour late in the afternoon left everyone to scatter for shelter.
