A man with burning ambition to try his luck on Phuket's cables

Phuket's Highly Strung Acrobat Proves Able on a Cable

Sunday, March 25, 2012
PHUKET: Some acrobats want to walk a wire across Niagra Falls. Others climb big city skyscrapers without a safety net.

In the Phuket version of the usual death-defying feats of balance, this man did his best today in Phuket's main street, Thepkasattri Road, about 6pm.

Nobody understands the Phuket system of cables because new ones are strung to replace old ones, and the old ones remain dangling there.

Is there a power cable among all those lines? Only the cable guys can say for sure.

This man didn't appear to be a cable guy, which is why onlookers called authorities when they saw him doing his balancing act in Thalang today.

They were shocked . . . but fortunately the man was not. After telling onlookers his name was ''Khun Tong,'' he was eventually coaxed down.

There were sighs of relief all round. Whether he enjoys the acrobatic life, only an encore will prove.

Considering his attitude towards safe practises and level of common sense, he was probably a local minivan or bus driver.

The man is a mentally ill homeless person. That's the sad part of the story, that local officials would not act to protect the man from himself. Surely, the provincial social services department could use some of its budget to provide counselling for this man.
