Phuket's New Governor Sets One Year Target to Solve Phuket's Nine Problems

Friday, October 10, 2014
PHUKET: New Governor Nisit Jansomwong listed Phuket's nine major problems last night and gave himself a year to solve them.

''As this is my ninth day in the role I will list Phuket's nine problems and try to solve them within one year,'' the governor wrote in a Facebook post at 9pm.

Earlier in the day, at 9am, he met with Phuket administrators at Phuket Provincial Hall in Phuket City to begin talks about the issues on the list.

The nine problems of Phuket as selected by the governor are: traffic, garbage, bad water, beaches, taxis, tourism safety and security, the damrungtam complaints centre (which must function more effectively), adopting government policy and quality of life.

Translation: A delay in the implementation and honouring of the promises made. Same old position. The time for action is now. Either the government carries out the much publicized program or it should just admit defeat and stop providing false hope and empty promises.

Don't expect change overnight, dave.

That's a bold statement. The last gove achieved nothing or it could be argued made the situation worse; each of those of course on coming to power also pledged to short out Phukets problems.

Good luck!

Nines are wild!

"The nine problems of Phuket as selected by the governor are...
quality of life."

How could the military improve the quality of life for a million plus people on the big island - Objectively?

or Subjectively? Pick your poison..

As farang - one must view Thailand through a Thai cultural lens, and not through a western paradigm. Only then would we understand the nuances of compromise and corruption - and avoid much frustration.

We have plenty of corruption in the west too - in different subjective-objective degrees.

Well, Khun Governor, As the jet sky operators seem to be untouchable, at least the jet sky operations can be banned from beaches were people just want to relax and swim, without the fumes, noise and danger of it. Why not 'offer' the jet sky operators a alternative, to move to Rawai beach? That beach is not a swimming beach. Than everybody happy!

It also would be nice if khun Governor orders a undercover operation on the shameless corruption of Phuket Immigration, at the airport as well in Phuket town. Why is this still going on, actually it becomes 'heavier'. The Boss of Phuket immigration denies criminal activities at airport and Phuket town office, now at Patong office as well. Clean up among tour guides, ok, but when a clean sweeping through the Phuket immigration 'officials'? Governor, 'your immigration is the entry door to Phuket. Tourist arrivals are flabbercasted by immigration corruption ( pay, but no bill!) and the still getting stronger taxi mafia.( taxi rates). Who is in charge on Phuket? Who is in control on Phuket?
