Phuket's New Governor to Take Charge on Beaches, Taxis and Traffic

Tuesday, October 7, 2014
PHUKET: New Governor Nisit Jansomwong made it plain to local authorities on Phuket yesterday that he will take responsibility for the island's key issues.

He nominated the three most important Phuket problems as beach arrangements, taxis and traffic. Special investigation teams will look at each of the issues, he said.

The new governor has already talked to the new commander of police and Phuket's district chiefs and made it plain that he is assuming responsibility for coordinating activities and declaring policy.

Governor Nisit spoke after returning from a meeting in Bangkok. Tomorrow he will greet the Minister for Tourism and Sport, Kobkan Wattanawarangkul, on her first visit to Phuket after Cabinet meets in Bangkok today.

It's believed that martial law is likely to continue for now with the Asian Beach Games scheduled for November 14-23.

Governor Nisit said yesterday that he was keen for Phuket people to welcome the competitors from 47 countries and their fellow visitors.

The games will be followed by the tenth anniversary of the Indian Ocean tsunami on December 26, with ambassadors from many countries awaiting information about how Thailand plans to mark the occasion.

Great news - we need a strong pro-active Governor and it seems he has his priorities right.

Is there any reason to suspect foul play ? No more details available ? Just that he fell and died ?

I'm sorry for him and his family. He should have been able to enjoy peaceful years of retirement.

Too soon to do more than respect his passing and offer condolences to his family, Herbert.

I hope the new Governor will use all the people that loose jobs by regulation of the beaches will pay them to clean all debris, garbage, old sandbags so it will not look like an old warzone when high season starts. Who has the responsebility for the final cleaning?

I would like to mention Jetski's.... why are we not hearing/seeing any positive moves about removing the "jet ski's" from the beaches, especially after all the accidents and ripoffs over the years.

One problem at a time, DG. Complete overnight change is not an option.

As happy tourists for many years, we definetely like the idea of cleaning up. We plan to come back again in March, BUT as Scandinavians it is impossibe for us to be on the Beach without sun beds and umbrellas. So if that possibility is not there, we must sadly chose another place for our holidays. Regards Danish tourists through 8 years.

Many Scandinavians deserted Phuket for Phang Nga when it became too crowded. Sunbeds in Phang Nga are banned. Your fellow Scandinavians seemed to have enjoyed themselves without sunbeds. The point should also be made that many Scandinavians come to Thailand's beaches to lie in the sun. They arrive pale and go home tanned. The sunbeds do not suit everyone.
