Phuket's Chalong Circle Solution a Roundabout Five Years Away

Tuesday, September 10, 2013
PHUKET: Commuting motorists coping with holdups generated by underpass construction in Phuket City now face five more years of impatience at Chalong Circle.

The island's five-way southern traffic hub will not be revitalised until 2018, a meeting heard today. And no standout solution appears evident.

Seven options put at a meeting at the Phuket Highways Department offices today all pose handicaps of different kinds.

At the conclusion of the meeting, a Phuket Waterworks representative pointed out that each of the seven options would involve major issues for existing water pipelines.

All options are to be taken to a public meeting on October 16, with the seven selections likely to be narrowed to three for discussion in November.

Option One

A tunnel from ChaoFa Road West to Viset Road. (Problem: Flooding outside HomePro)

Option Two

A tunnel from ChaoFa east Road to Viset Road

Option Three

A tunnel from ChaoFa East Road to Viset Road and a tunnel from Viset Road to ChaFa West Road (Problem: traffic)

Option Four

Option Three but with overpasses instead of tunnels (Problem: Noise for residents)

Option Five

Tunnel fron Viset Road to ChaoFa East Road and ChaoFa West Road

Option Six

Overpasses from Viset Road to ChaoFa West Road and back the other way

Option Seven

Overpasses from Viset Road to ChaoFa East Road and back the other way

Tailbacks continue because of construction of the Central Festival underpass in Phuket City with work yet to commence on the Tesco Lotus intersection underpass a kilometer down the bypass road.

You are doing it wrong.

Instead of asking how to serve the massive amount of traffic, step back and take a look at this massive amount of traffic!

Instead of supporting people to buy new cars by paying them 100,000 baht, pay them to sell their car.

Support them to ride bicycle or to take the bus .. train ..... wat .. solly no have?

A roundabout that is much bigger would likely be much more effective. It would require compulsory land purchase but in principle surely that's a better option than under and over-passes?

Or for something really different, a toll collection at the circle would really cut down the traffic!

I take the road everyday from Chaofa to Karon and do not see an issue with the Chalong Circle. At peak time the traffic jam takes me about 20 minutes to clear at most and that is mainly because the police decided to go disturb the natural flow of traffic by making it one way. I really cannot imagine another underpass digging for the next 5 years. Central Festival's underpass is unlikely to solve the traffic problems because traffic will bottleneck again at the area in front of the school. It was not well thought of at all and a very blatant attempt to explain the use of government funds.

The authorities should forget about changing the circle itself to fix the problem, other than minor improvements such as three lanes from the south - one reserved for Patong traffic.

Instead, they should build new roads well away from the circle to give traffic alternative routes.

For example, there is plenty of land to the north west of the circle for Patong traffic - the main reason for hold ups at the circle.

Also, the road to Chalong pier should be made one way - from west to east. This would also prevent the massive jams near the beach and in soi Sukee when commuter vans try to pick up passengers from the boats.

Option eight: Close the way to Chalong Pier which can be achieved by Soi Sukee that obviously needs to be made viable by buses and the most traffic. So, with only four roads affected, trafficking in Chalong Circle can be more fluid.

A traffic light and respecting green & red lights might do... as it does in many places around the world.
Add reasonable public transport and reduce the nbr. of taxis. These tunnel-mania is just madness !

"A traffic light and respecting green & red lights might do"
As experiences has shown, traffic lights will not do the trick there.
