PHUKET has its long-awaited Regional Blood Centre. It opened yesterday. Now all it needs is a doctor.
The job is there for anyone who wants to help, who has the right qualifications.
For years, the Andaman has needed a centre to provide blood for hospitals throughout the entire 14 provinces that make up the southern region.
Yesterday the Governor, Wichai Praisa-nob, and his wife, Thaisika, opened the new blood ''bank.'' They are president and vice-president of the regional Red Cross.
A tsunami and an air crash are just two of the large-scale disasters Phuket has had to deal with in the past five years. Road mishaps also require ready supplies of blood for transfusions.
The centre is capable of storing blood and creating longer-lasting plasma, as well as recording everything digitally and automatically to reduce the chances of human error.
The ''bank'' is a Finnish gift that came as a result of the 2004 tsunami, in which 184 Finns numbered among the 5400 victims.
Near the employment offices in Phuket City, the centre is in Rattanakosin 200 Pee Road.
A larger building, next door, which will contain offices and seminar training rooms, as well as a special space for the organisation's patron, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, will be opened on the Queen's Birthday, August 12.
The process of collecting blood is safer on a larger scale because more reliable testing methods will be used (they are expensive so hospitals may not be able to afford them individually).
The blood products are mostly for the population in all the six Andaman provinces, totalling some two million people, although donations are also available if required in other souther provinces.
New Blood Centre Set To Save Lives
One positive from the 2004 tsunami is the work of the Finnish Red Cross. They have stayed on to create a vital regional blood centre on Phuket and a scheme to save lives at sea.
