The news will bring great delight to all Phuket residents and visitors.
For years, the old car park has been choked and it was often difficult to find a space, leading to double-parking and a hopeless crush.
Those days are gone, and the old car park was a barren wasteland last night. It would have been easy to park there and claim the whole area for a single car.
However, the lights were on in the first three storeys of the five-storey car park. And that's where all the vehicles were parking, with the exception of meter taxis and minivans, which have priority spots in front of the old terminal.
Phuketwan also followed the signposted ''Shortcut to the Airport'' route to Phuket International Airport and was delighted to find there were signs at every turnpoint - and the shortcut quickly led to the new airport carpark.
Asian Beach Games competitors and supporters from more than 40 countries, getting set for the opening of the world-class event on Friday, will be surprised and delighted to find that talk of a crowded Phuket airport car park is untrue.
Now if only they'd had time to plant a grove of trees . . . the car park is destined to be built over as the race to complete Phuket's new international airport continues.
Yes, there airport shortcut is great and there have always been signs at every turn point easily to be followed. No idea, why some readers posted on this page recently that there are none.

The same reporter who wrote the article has tried the shortcut route, without signs and with signs for the first time last night. Perhaps there is more than one shortcut.
