Now residents of Phuket can park in the multi-storey car park

Phuket's New Airport Car Park Takes Off: Photo Special

Thursday, November 13, 2014
PHUKET: The new multi-storey airport car park is now open and the old car park is empty, Phuketwan discovered on a flying visit to the Phuket International Airport last night.

The news will bring great delight to all Phuket residents and visitors.

For years, the old car park has been choked and it was often difficult to find a space, leading to double-parking and a hopeless crush.

Those days are gone, and the old car park was a barren wasteland last night. It would have been easy to park there and claim the whole area for a single car.

However, the lights were on in the first three storeys of the five-storey car park. And that's where all the vehicles were parking, with the exception of meter taxis and minivans, which have priority spots in front of the old terminal.

Phuketwan also followed the signposted ''Shortcut to the Airport'' route to Phuket International Airport and was delighted to find there were signs at every turnpoint - and the shortcut quickly led to the new airport carpark.

Asian Beach Games competitors and supporters from more than 40 countries, getting set for the opening of the world-class event on Friday, will be surprised and delighted to find that talk of a crowded Phuket airport car park is untrue.

Now if only they'd had time to plant a grove of trees . . . the car park is destined to be built over as the race to complete Phuket's new international airport continues.

Yes, there airport shortcut is great and there have always been signs at every turn point easily to be followed. No idea, why some readers posted on this page recently that there are none.

Editor Comment:

The same reporter who wrote the article has tried the shortcut route, without signs and with signs for the first time last night. Perhaps there is more than one shortcut.

Is it true that the taxi's are charging B 500 to go from the new car park to the current airport!?

@Editor: I think you are right and wrong at the same time... ;-) As far as I understand there is bascially only one "official" short cut. However, there are two entrance roads to it which after a short while lead to the same main short cut. Depending on which entrance road you will take, you will find signs from the very beginnning on or a after a short distance a bit later.

AOT are absolutely pathetic!

Upon turning into the airport there are NO SIGNS saying turn left to park! It wasn't until I parked did someone come on a bike scolding me and pointing at the new parking. NOT ONE ARROW! I ended up leaving the airport doing a U-turn just to come back in.

Upon entering the parking I decided to try the Ladies parking.. another good idea gone horribly wrong! It was on the 3rd floor.

There is no elevator, or at least I was not pointed to one. This would mean that ladies parking on the 3rd floor have to walk down 3 flights of stairs with all their luggage (and imagine if they had kids in tow)!

Luckily I was just doing a drop off and had NO luggage to carry. Had I had luggage, for example 20 kilos and a 7 kilo carry on I would have been f*kct!

Also I walked down an empty closed in stairwell alone. More dangerous then parking in co-ed parking is the stairwell which makes a nice place for a criminal to lurk. It was 6am and felt a bit vulnerable as it was empty. It would definitely be more daunting at later at night.

Also there was again NO signage pointing the way out. Once out of the car parking you must across where all the taxis and and mini vans and other traffic is rushing in to drop off people. Perhaps there will be a walk way above but for now it is somewhat of a free for all.

Yes great now there is a big empty lot for all the taxis to park just near the entrance and secret multilevel parking garage. Hope to see some improvements soon.

A simple sign providing some information but as we know information is not highly regarded here.

@hotgem- there is a courtesy bus to and from the carpark- no need for taxis.

@vfaye- its a bit difficult to miss- its 5 Storeys high! As you were doing a drop-off why would you need the facility anyway? Maybe you should give the place a chance to bed in a bit- its a vast improvement on before. Methinks the lady doth protest too much.

Where do motorbikes park now?

Have the rules changed? I thought the answer was ''Anywhere they like.''

Does this mean the old carpark is now closed for parking, or can we still park there?
And is the old terminal still being used for check-ins, arrivals and departures etc?

The old car park appaers to be closed. The same terminal will be in use until the new international terminal is finished, then it will become the domestic terminal.

Hi Ed, I'm going to pick up my family the 15.Des., There are 2 small children in the group. Where can I park as close to the arrivals as possible?

I would be surprised if it wasn't still possible to swing past the door and make a quick pickup without parking. Otherwise, the new car park will probably be organised and not too hard.

MisterRee, Indeed not hard to miss but upon entering the normal entrance of the airport there is no sign saying make an immediate left to park and no sign saying the old car park is "forbidden" to be parked in.
I was dropping off someone with their luggage but then parked to go see them off properly. Inside the airport.
Please let me know your phone number so when I am departing alone and need to park I can call you to carry my 27 kilos of luggage up and down 3 flights of stairs and across the busy entryway!

An improvement I agree as parking in neutral is not idea. But why not put an arrow? Just one arrow? For starters and put an elevator! Geez. Another half-arse improvement should have been and could have been.......
