Phuket Youth Killed, Girl in Coma as Motorcycle Slams into Parked Truck

Sunday, May 13, 2012
PHUKET: A young man was killed and his 16-year-old girlfriend is in a coma today after a motorcycle smashed into a parked truck on Phuket last night.

Police are hoping that Kamonwan Nookuntood, of Thalang, will be able to tell them what happened . . . if doctors can save her.

The 16-year-old was transferred from Thalang Hospital to Vachira Phuket Hospital in Phuket City after last night's crash on the Paklok-Muangmong Road, the main road east from Phuket's central Heroines Monument roundabout.

She was apparently on the back of a red-plate motorcycle being ridden by Chanrarong Nanphosri, 17, when the motorcycle hit the read of a parked 10-wheel truck at speed.

Khun Chanrarong died at the scene. Police said they could find no motorcycle helmets.

The crash took place about five kilometres from the monument. Police said it was illegal for a 10-wheel truck to park alongside a road without lights.

Several protests have been held by local villagers on the stretch of road over crash fatalities in poorly-lit sections. The latest took place earlier this year when two locals on a motorcycle and sidecar were hit by a pick-up and killed.

Police said it was illegal for a 10-wheel truck to park alongside a road without lights.... so sad. I hope the driver is dealt with!

Sad waste of life. Unfortunately in Thailand it usually takes something like this before some action is taken. This is not the first time motorcyclists have died by running into the back of an unlit truck along this stretch. Perhaps some pressure will now be put on the police to enforce the laws prohibiting it.

And the trucker maybe gets fined with 300 baht for parking violation...

"This is not the first time motorcyclists have died by running into the back of an unlit truck along this stretch"
You're right. But can the road law 'motorcycles have to drive as far left, as possible' can have something to do with it? Most moto's driving beside the white line, on the left of the road! I don't see that as part of the drive lane, because: parking cars, oncoming wrong direction drivers, pedestrians, ....!
As long motorcycles not getting the same rights and 'have' to be out of the way of 'I'm driving a car, you only a motorcycles'-people, this will happen again, and again!
