Phuket New Year 2011: first the prayers, then the party

Phuket New Year 2012, Worth Doing it Twice

Monday, December 12, 2011
PHUKET: Phuket is to enjoy a three-day celebration leading up to Phuket New Year 2012, and there will only be a short gap between the traditional Western New Year and Chinese New Year.

The arrival of the Year of the Dragon is unusually early - on January 23 - and another bonus for Phuket in a high season that appears certain to break all occupancy records. Mostly, Chinese New Years fall in February.

With two new years falling so closely together, January is expected to be a bumper month on Phuket as the peak holiday season is followed quickly by a Chinese NY season.

Events such as the three-day New Year festival in Phuket City - the ''Colorful Phuket Countdown 2012'' - help to crowd even more excitement into a calendar that is bound to be more packed in 2012 than it has been in 2011.

Although there will also be events at Saphan Hin and the Metropole Circle in Phuket City to mark New Year as well as others around Phuket, maximum effort is going into the December 29-31 shows at Sanam Chai, the park opposite Provincial Hall and the offices of the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation.

December 29 Opening ceremony 6pm; 7pm Singing and dancing show; 8pm concert by singer Ying Thitikan.

December 30 7pm Countdown dancing contest; 9pm concert by singer Tai Oratai; 11pm rock star Pongpat Wachirabanjong.

December 31 5.30pm Sunset ceremony with big-screen link to Cape Promthep, Saphan Hin; 6.30pm Dance contest final; 8pm Concert by singer Kanom Jeen; Midnight celebration.

I think that was this year?

"The arrival of the Year of the Rabbit is unusually early - on January 23"

Next year is the Year of the Dragon.
