Phuket's Karon beach on the day last month when a tourist drowned

Phuket Woman Rescued from Wild Surf at Karon

Thursday, September 9, 2010
A PHUKET woman was rescued from the surf at Karon beach yesterday and is now recovering in Vachira Hospital in Phuket City.

Jarunee Janthasomo went to the beach with her family and found herself in difficulties in the churning water about 4pm when she was knocked off her feet. Red flags were flying.

A lifeguard spokesperson said Khun Jarunee was pulled from the water by three lifeguards. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was performed on the sand.

She was taken to Patong Hospital and then transferred to Vachira Hospital, where doctors today expect her to make a full recovery.

At least three tourists have drowned on Karon and Kata beaches in the past few weeks.

*Phuket's annual Surf Lifesaving carnival is being staged at Loma Park in Patong this Saturday. The Quiksilver 2010 Surf Competition follows at Kata beach from September 22-26.

The Karon Municipality has done a good job in putting up warning signs at every entry to the beach along the Karon Beach, yet, every day people still ignore the red flags, the warnings from the beach guards. Mai Pen Rai attitude continues. But kudos to the Karon Municipality for improving the information to all.

Editor Comment:

Easier said than done. There are not many lifeguards and the beach is very long.
