The fatal crash occurred about a kilometre from Phuket's BIS school

Phuket Van Driver Charged Over Death of Bike Rider

Wednesday, July 23, 2014
PHUKET: Police have charged a man involved in a fatal collision on Phuket yesterday with dangerous driving leading to a death.

Mamid Pratep Na Thalang, 57, had just turned left off Thapkasattri Road in Kor Kaew about 5.30pm when his minivan collided with Jantima Srilertchalalai, who was riding her motorbike about one kilometer from British International School.

Khun Jantima, 24, was killed. A helmet was found on the road nearby but officers are not able to say whether she was wearing it at the time.

A crowd gathered at the scene, as happens whenever there is a crash anywhere on Phuket. There was no suggestion of Khun Mamid fleeing.

Phuket's road toll for 2014 is not known. Authorities ceased releasing monthly updates in April, 2012.

Unfortunately this is a well used rat run for vehicles travelling at excessive speeds. This is s straight stretch of the road so no excuse for this waste of a life.

Editor Comment:

You can say it, but as usual it wouldn't be true. The notion that police reaction to a death varies is all in your head.

Manic van drivers are notorious along this stretch of road.
A police presence or taxi/van speed blitz would be very welcome and would save additional fatalities.

With road deaths and drownings going unreported since 2012, tourists are left ignorant of the facts, just as TAT seems ignorant of the eventual backlash that will come back to bite them. It's laugh now and cry later, when it should be the other way around, for sanity's sake.

New or more road humps to slow traffic down would help lower the amount and severity of accidents. Sad this young lady lost her life.

Charing with dangerous driving is SOP, to give police time to investigate what really happened.

Maybe a good idea to wait for the investigation to conclude before judging the driver. Unless you were all witnesses?

Judging by the photograph, the van is not even on his side of the road. Yes vans, heavy construction trucks and cement lorries use this road as their own race track. Count on many more deaths from all users of this road when it becomes the second bypass road. RIP Jantima.
