Phuket Underpass to Be Complete on March 6, Says Roads Department

Monday, January 26, 2015
PHUKET: The underpass at Central Festival Phuket is expected to be completed on March 6, officials from the Phuket Roads Department revealed today.

The project - Phuket's first underpass - was due to be completed in 720 days but took 150 days longer than expected.

Budget of 20 million baht has been approved for additional work on the Central Festival Phuket underpass and about a kilometre down the bypass road at the Tesco Lotus underpass, which is still under construction.

The extra work is designed to make sure both underpasses are not affected by flooding.

The Roads Department also announced the closure of the Mark Prok u-turn in Thepkasattri Road from today until March 9 for work on an electrical station.

I think it's mistake there, not March 6th, but probably June 3rd? Or at least how we should read it.

I wonder if the contractor will be penalized for the 150 days tardiness.

Extra work to make sure it doesn't flood? Why would this be extra work. Shouldn't it be built not to flood?
Also no late fee clause?

Very strange contract.

Then I feel pretty confident it will be completed in November, when I return to Phuket after a well-deserved, 2 year absence..

They've got to be joking..."THE EXTRA WORK IS DESIGNED TO MAKE SURE BOTH UNDERPASSES ARE NOT AFFECTED BY FLOODING"... what sort of design team did they use for these projects to not have included the necessary drainage, pumps etc in the first place.

Folks calm down now. Work completed by March 6th, but no year date is given? Won't flood? It is dug under the goundwater level. Expect long traffic delays for a long while yet?

There doesn't seem to be much of an effort made to keep to the schedule. Whenever I drive by I see idle machinery and few people working. If this were Canada, or any other developed country, a project like this would have been completed long ago.
