PHUKET: A daily wrap of Thailand news, with a Phuket perspective, plus relevant reports from national and international media.

PHUKET'S tuk-tuk drivers are beaten up in stern.de, Germany's multi-milion readership magazine. In a long article, the author reports on ''highwaymen'' who ''lurk in front of hotels, all gruff grumble with 'Where you go? Tuk tuk?' That may be amusing on the first day. But soon it just sucks.''
The magazine reports on Phuket's ''Mafia,'' the savage bashing of Phuket expat Kurt Trotnow over a 100-baht fare, and the excessively high Phuket charges compared to Bangkok. ''The tuk-tuk mafia has a firm grip on Phuket,'' the magazine says. ''Whoever tries to break their power, we must expect the worst.''
The magazine labels the tuk-tuks a ''serious threat to Phuket tourism,'' with the number of German visitors in decline. It then goes on to look at Phuket's jet-skis.

pattayapeople.com On Saturday at 2am, Tourist Police arrested five men for threatening a group of tourists. These greedy fellows burst into the Marriot Resort and Spa, located next to Royal Garden Plaza, to harass a group of tourists into paying for the damage of a jet-ski, or else face bodily harm.

" PHUKET'S tuk-tuk drivers are beaten up in stern.de, Germany's multi-milion readership magazine."

A very well written article in an overseas magazine which leaves no doubt in the mind of an intending tourist whether or not to visit Phuket.

Well summed up in the bottom line "Amazing Thailand."

http://www.stern.de/reise/fernreisen/thailand-tuk-tuk-mafia-hat-phuket-fest-im-griff-1732287.html + Google translate.

I do hope the Governor and the others that can possibly rectify the current situation get to read this story and take some positive and immediate action whilst there is still some time left.

This report is from only one overseas magazine, how many others are about to follow ?

Gerd, a lot of the damage has already been done.

You'll notice that Honorary Counsel Naumann actually puts numbers to the drop in German tourists to Phuket. In 2007, there were 250,000 German visitors to Phuket. The last recorded figures - I'm assuming that they're for 2010 - show only 170,000.

Naumann goes on to predict that, in the next couple of years, the number will drop to 120,000.

After the Stern article, Phuket can count itself lucky if it has the high side of 100,000 German tourists 2 or 3 years from now.
