Phuket Tuk-Tuk, Taxi Drivers Arrested in Patong Have Vehicles Impounded

Tuesday, September 9, 2014
PHUKET: Vehicles belonging to 13 illegal tuk-tuk and taxi drivers arrested last night are being impounded and will not be returned to the owners until after their trials have concluded.

Police and the military in Patong arrested the 13 drivers and seized their vehicles as a clamp on taxi transport in Patong went into effect yesterday evening, Patong traffic police chief Lieutenant Eakrat Plaidung said today.

''The message is going out that green-plate taxis are no longer to park in public spaces,'' he said.

''This means they will have to find private parking spots off the roads or park in the designated parking area at Tritrang with other green-plates and wait for resorts to call them in as required.''

Drivers held yesterday have had to pay 100,000 baht bail. They could face five years in jail and/or a fine of 100,000 baht.

Another 22 taxis and tuk-tuks were impounded at Phuket City Police Station in an earlier swoop on Patong in relation to a street blockade in March.

Excellent ! Impounding the vehicles is a real threat and deterrent. Something that was painfully lacking from law enforcement for over a decade.

We are capable of taking our own photos, thanks, sharp. If you are in a hurry to have change arrive overnight rather than progressively, do some prints and take them to the police station.

"Drivers held yesterday have had to pay 100,000 baht bail."
Yet alleged kingpin ex Mayor paid only 150,000 Baht

No point in keeping anyone in a overcrowded jail. ''Kingpin'' is another of those poor abused tabloid words, like ''mob'' for a peaceful crowd and ''mafia'' for a cartel. For ''kingpin'' read local businessman.

Please keep going - we know you will :-)

We're journailsts. not activists. We don't take sides. Any individual can sort right from wrong without needing PW. But perhaps you are the exception, phonus.

"We're journailsts. not activists."

He's not asking you to shave your head, he's asking for an email address.

No point in attempting this kind of vigilante action without going to the police station and making personal contact, PB. Great if readers came out from behind their anonymity and actual did something constructive. Chances of that happening are probably quite reasonable in the case of people who care. Goodbye again.

Taxis and Tuk Tuks were parked along the entire length of Patong Beach Road at 8pm last night.

Not sure if this is permitted or not, but no restrictions were in place.
