Phuket Tourists Choose Winning Beaches: Photo Special

Phuket Tourists Choose Winning Beaches: Photo Special

Wednesday, January 21, 2015
PHUKET: Beaches on Phuket that have no rules about controls on personal umbrellas and no jet-skis in the water appear to be winners with tourists, Phuketwan discovered yesterday.

By doing what the vendors want, Phuket's Governor and Patong's mayor appear to be compromising the appeal of beaches to meet the demands of private enterprise.

And hasn't that been the problem all along?

Nai Harn and Yanui beaches looked great yesterday with small bright personal umbrellas scattered wherever swimmers wished.

There were no massage beds to be seen and no jet-skis, either.

While there were no neat rows of umbrellas, the beaches looked idyllic and the people on the beaches appeared to be enjoying themselves.

One adventurous couple even brought his and hers air mattresses and an air pump.

When we last visited Patong, the large rent umbrellas with their metal spikes certainly appeared to be returning.

The governor's idea of allowing umbrellas in just 10 percent of Phuket's beaches seems to be an idea that will not work for the DIY umbrella tourists.

The swimmers have adapted to bringing their own brollies.

Meanwhile, Prince of Songkhla University is doing some investigating about the 10 percent idea. On what we saw yesterday, allowing people to bring their own brollies but making sure commerce is not allowed a new foothold could be the way forward.

Great article, just goes to show what could be accomplished if the Governor and the other authorities actually listened to tourists (which lets not forget are the people who pay all the bills)

Just think how successful Phuket could be if the interests of the many were put ahead of the interests of the few.

Come on authorities.... what more do you need???

unless a new law has been passed then if it is still illegal to use the public beach for business- even if that's just 10% of the beach, it is illegal.. how is it possible that the governor is allowed to condone this??

I've seen last week on Patong group of tourists pushed in a PhiPhiDon-style a trolley, like of hotel housekeeper, full of their umbrellas and mats along Haad Patong Rd. from the beach.

Khun Patong Mayor came forward to public with some statistics on justification of that slightly increasing 10% would work - although it apparently shows she didn't her math home work on it:
- she stated that 10% rule gives a space for just 300 beds;
- she claimed there is 7000 bead goers daily, and she thinks that most of them will need a bed.

So, assuming that out of those 7,000, only 3,000 are simultaneously using a beach, that means, as per arithmetics above that beds will cover 100% of the beach.

This leads to a conclusion that on such well-attended beach beds are not feasible solution at all and at any time.
Exactly for the reason that rationing beds and being still in balance with nature, will leave majority of potential bed-users without beds, so equality of treatment and prevention of corruption and abuse, then means no beds area at all.

Just common sense, but does common sense exist here with the local authorities

This sunbed campaign has been a great success, which is evident in the number of tourists who have been on Phuket in January 1995. But what does a bit unemployment and a growing number of local families without incomes mean, against the important matter, that writers who have theirs on the dry, can enjoy the sight of a beach that is not crowded by tourists

Thailand has good laws in place, the question is when they are enforced. Thai people like to play games and the word Thailand in Thai means freeland. Therefore Thais do not like being restricted, free enterprise, up to me etc

Hey Tourists and local beach goingers. just face the fact that the priority is the jet skies and para-sailor business.
You as user of a public beach are only tolerated if you not disturb that big money business. You get it?

I absolutely do not understand the ..pushing & pulling.. in beach matters by Governor and mainly patong mayor. What is their aim? What is their hidden agenda? Why not leave things as it happens at coastline north of Phuket, or Krabi? What is that obsession to keep dangerous jet skies and very disturbing parasail things on Patong beach? It must be a money thing. As we say: follow the money!

Everywhere in the world are public beaches free for the public, but not on Phuket.
I think it should be not a local 'University' to do some investigation. Better ask European, Vietnamese or Australian authorities expertise. Songkhla University for sure has not the expertise/professionality to analyse. What do they know about beaches in relation with foreign visiters? Nothing. It looks like they got themselves a good money earning project. ( paid by jet sky and parasail business people).

Is there a lknd of revolution taken a place overnight at Patong beach seas?
Jet-ski zones were highly reduced - what I see at the moment!
People /Jetskis number of segments increased in number, but yes, jet-ski segments now are sliced into strips like 50m wide...
Can't believe my eyes..

I truly hate to rain on your parade and dislike being contradictory but today (and for the last several weeks) there are indeed on-beach massage facilities in various shapes and forms. By the renovated Phuket Yacht Club there are two massage pavilions.

Both of these officials should be restricted to stay within 10% of their office buildings. They are useless outside of their offices.
