Phuket Tourist's Arm Slashed in Fighting Off Beach Road Bag Snatchers

Monday, November 24, 2014
PHUKET: An Italian couple fought off bag-snatchers who slashed the man's arm with a knife before riding off on a motorcycle empty-handed on Phuket early today.

Herbert Wonderer, 59, and Katherina Miskarin, 54, told police they had been dining out at Dino Park in Karon and were walking back to the Hilton Arcadia Phuket Resort and Spa when the would-be bandits pulled up alongside them on Karon's beach road.

The young man riding pillion dismounted and tried to snatch the bag but Mr Wonderer intervened and was slashed on an arm.

The wound was superficial and the couple were continuing their holiday today.

Officers from Karon Police Station, on the same road, hope security camera footage will enable them to quickly nab the failed bag-snatchers.

In the old days I had pride and would fight back but now sadly having the Australian lady die by fighting back it is just not worth it. Credit cards, cash etc can be replaced, your life cannot. I am not for a second saying this type of crime is acceptable but facts are facts. With more and more CCTV I hope there will be less crime. There are many more CCTVs than even a few years ago.

This happens in Bangkok all the time and there they put up warning signs in Thai and English in areas where its known to happen, why can't they here or would that tarnish the image

Editor Comment:

Where on Phuket would you be safe on the street from a bag-snatcher, Michael? Locals and tourists have fallen victim from time to time all over the island. It's a problem but it's not out of hand.

This is a terrible thing, born out of desperation i guess. But its interesting to see that of late several potential victims have fought back and the perpetrators have left empty handed. Its risky , but it might cause potential thieves to think again .

'Where on Phuket would you be safe on the street from a bag-snatcher'. Given the amount of reporting this stretch of road is notorious for this sort of activity. Doesn't take a lot to work out that increased police patrols and checkpoints would curb this activity or move it to a less populous route. Watching cameras from a police box achieves nothing.
