Passengers departing Phuket should allow three hours for extra safety

Phuket Tourists Advised to Allow Three Hours at Phuket Airport

Saturday, May 10, 2014
PHUKET: Passengers flying out through Phuket International Airport are being advised to allow three hours for processing because of increased security checks.

Vehicles entering the airport perimeters are being more thoroughly searched following terrorist bomb explosions in the southern tourist hub of Had Yai earlier this week.

While there has never been an incident in a tourist centre in Thailand further north that Had Yai, authorities are keen to keep risks to a minimum.

A large bomb was found in a car at Phuket City Police Station last year but investigators determined that it was not designed to explode at the station and had merely been left there, possibly as a warning.

I went through the phuket airport this afternoon and didn't notice any extra security.

In fact I forgot to take my mobile phone out of my pocket and the metal detector didn't catch it.

The security check at HKT could at best be described as going through the motions and at worst as a total joke.

The people with the metal detectors merely run them up and down your body, never once bothering to check what it actually alerts about.

If they will now actually get serious about their job, great, but 3 hrs is a ridiculous demand. Efficient security checks can be managed in a fraction of that time just 2hrs away at Changi airport.

Phuketwan used to be a newspaper with a focus on tourists and tourism. Now it is something else.

We've never been a newspaper, bjorn. Perhaps you're confusing us with some other site.

Different airports have different models. At Phuket you go through a metal detector upon entry, In Singapore you only go through at the gate. Self explanatory really, clearly the airplane is the most vulnerable place. London's Heathrow you had/have to take your shoes off sometime. Clearly the best security is at Israel's airports so if they offer an advisory service that would be beneficial. Sadly Bali has shown that Phuket could although a tourist area be a target.

You really should be completely honest and make the point that anywhere in the world could be a target these days, FF. And Indonesian terrorists are more likely to choose Indonesian targets, should they attempt to overcome much more intense security to strike again. There is no reason to suspect that Phuket is more likely to become a target than the places tourists call home. Russian, Chinese, European and Australian visitors have no reason to feel less safe on Phuket than they do anywhere else.
